All about this product

Hirsch Natur Norwegian wool socks in petrol and blue

These are the kind of socks whose color alone makes your feet feel warmer. Deep petrol is combined with dark blue and a classic Norwegian star pattern. Comfortably wintry, but fortunately without reindeer, Christmas trees, or other designs you suddenly can't wear after December.

These warm Norwegian socks from Hirsch Natur are made of 100% organic virgin wool from controlled organic livestock (KbT). They are sturdy and have a thick knit, making them wonderful for cold days, roomy boots, clogs, work shoes, and sturdy winter footwear.

  • Made of 100% organic virgin wool (KbT)
  • Warm Norwegian star pattern in petrol and dark blue
  • Sturdy, thicker quality
  • Breathable and moisture-regulating
  • Naturally less prone to odors
  • Suitable for men and women
  • Made by Hirsch Natur in Germany
  • Hirsch Natur runs large: usually choose a size smaller

What type of wool sock is model 030?

Model 030 is one of the sturdier Norwegian socks from Hirsch Natur. The sock reaches above the ankle and has a fuller knit than the thin Norwegian models from the 156 series. This provides more insulation and light cushioning around your foot.

This sock fits best in shoes with enough space left over. Think of roomy boots, clogs, work shoes, or somewhat wider winter footwear. In tight sneakers or dress shoes, this quality might be too thick.

Pay particular attention to the room near your toes. A thick wool sock only works well if your shoe doesn't pinch. If the sock makes your shoe too tight, the insulating layer of air around your foot disappears, and your toes may actually feel colder.

Petrol and dark blue: winter without the gloom

Petrol sits exactly between blue and green. In combination with dark blue, the Norwegian star pattern gains a lot of depth without the sock becoming too colorful or bright. This makes it easy to combine with denim, gray, dark blue, brown, and black.

Colors may vary slightly due to the use of natural wool and different production batches. That is part of a product made of pure natural fibers and makes every pair just a little bit different.

Why do pure wool socks feel so good?

Wool retains heat, but doesn't completely seal off your feet. The fiber can absorb moisture without feeling wet or clammy and helps regulate the temperature around your feet. This makes wool socks pleasant not only when it's freezing but also when you are alternating between indoors and outdoors throughout the day.

Moreover, wool is less prone to retaining odors than many synthetic materials. One customer shared that she had worn these socks for several days and still couldn't smell any sweat. She was also very enthusiastic about the petrol-blue color and the warmth. That is a personal customer experience and, of course, no guarantee that every pair of feet will react exactly the same.

Important: Hirsch Natur socks run large

Our most important tip is to choose these socks one size smaller than you normally wear. Hirsch Natur runs quite large, and the wool can also become slightly more supple while wearing.

For example, do you wear shoe size 39 or 40? Then choose size 38/39. Do you wear size 41 or 42? Then look at size 40/41. The heel of the sock should sit neatly around your own heel and not end halfway up your ankle.

A wool sock that is too large creates excess fabric and folds in your shoe. This can cause the sock to slide, which is less comfortable to walk in and causes extra friction. A sock that is too small is also disadvantageous: the wool fibers at the heel and toes will be under constant tension.

Do the socks become looser during wear?

Yes, that can happen. Pure wool is resilient, but these socks contain no synthetic fibers to pull the knit back tightly. During wear, the wool becomes more supple and the sock may feel a bit looser. After resting and careful washing, the knit can partially recover, but don't expect the same tight fit as a technical sock with elastane or polyamide.

Most customers are enthusiastic about the warmth, color, and comfort. However, we also want to be honest about a less positive experience. One customer felt that her socks became too loose and limp after a few days of wear and started sliding in her shoes, even after she had chosen a size smaller for a subsequent pair.

Do you have very narrow feet or are you looking for a tightly fitting sock for intensive hiking? Then this model may not be the best choice. In that case, check out our wool hiking socks or ask us for personal advice. For warm feet in a roomy boot, clog, or winter shoe, model 030 is a wonderful choice.

A cuff that stays in place without synthetic material against your skin

In the upper part of the cuff, small elastic threads are knitted in. These are completely integrated into the knit and do not touch your skin. They are necessary to help keep the sock in place.

The cuff should sit comfortably around your leg. This is not a medical, pressure-free, or supportive sock. Do you suffer from swelling, circulation problems, or cuffs that pinch easily? Then check out our roomier wool-silk bed socks or ask for advice from a doctor or podiatrist.

Pure wool socks can wear out

We like to be honest about this in advance: socks made of 100% wool wear out faster than socks to which strong synthetic fibers have been added. With every step, the sock rubs between your foot and shoe. Especially at the toes, heel, and ball of the foot, the knit can therefore become thinner.

How quickly this happens varies greatly from person to person. The size of the sock, the fit and interior of your shoes, your gait, toenails, calluses, and the intensity with which you wear the socks all have an influence.

Therefore, do not wear these socks directly on a hard floor. Even small grains of sand cause extra friction with every step. Do you want to wear the socks indoors? Then pull well-fitting slippers or house shoes over them. Also note: pure wool socks can be slippery on stairs and smooth floors.

Normal wear and tear is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty. Check your socks regularly. Do you see a thin spot forming? That is the best moment to reinforce the wool. If you wait until there is a full hole, the knit can unravel further.

In our blog Hole in your wool sock? How to prevent and repair it you can read how wear occurs and what you can do about it. You can also find darning wool, darning needles, darning eggs, and darning mushrooms with us.

How to make your Norwegian wool socks last longer

  • Usually choose one size smaller for Hirsch Natur.
  • Wear the socks in shoes with sufficient space.
  • Avoid sliding and folding in your shoes.
  • Do not walk on hard floors without slippers.
  • Alternate different pairs and give the wool a rest.
  • Keep toenails smooth and take care of sharp calluses.
  • Check the heel, toes, and ball of the foot regularly.
  • Repair thin spots before a hole appears.

How often should you wash wool socks?

Not after every wear. Wool has natural self-cleaning properties and is less prone to retaining odors. Let your socks air out well after wearing and give them a day of rest. Often they are fresh enough to wear again afterwards.

Do they still need to be washed? Always follow the wash label. Wash them carefully with cold or lukewarm water. If machine washing is allowed on the label, use only a true wool wash program at a maximum of 30 degrees, with little movement and a low spin speed.

Use a small amount of suitable wool detergent with lanolin, such as our Lanalicious detergent for wool and silk. Do not use regular detergent, fabric softener, or a dryer. Do not wring out the socks; gently press out excess water and let them dry flat in the shade.

Do not place wet wool socks on a hot radiator. Heat, friction, and strong temperature fluctuations can cause untreated wool to shrink or felt.

Wol is fantastisch

And just like that, you were gone!

Was koud of lauw
