All about this product

Hirsch Natur Norwegian wool socks Pine

The name Pine could not have been chosen better. These sturdy Norwegian socks combine deep pine green with a vibrant moss green pattern. It is as if you are looking down during a forest walk and discovering that even your socks are perfectly in tune with your surroundings.

Pine is executed in the thick Hirsch Natur model 030. These socks are made of 100% organic wool and offer more warmth and volume than the thin 156 series. They are particularly suitable for roomy shoes, boots, hiking boots, and slippers.

A Norwegian pattern in true forest colors

The base color is a very dark pine green shade. The Norwegian motifs are knitted in a lighter, heathered moss green. The solid cuff, heel, and toe provide calm color blocks amidst the intricate pattern.

This combination pairs beautifully with denim, brown, cognac, gray, black, and other shades of green. The socks are distinctive enough to stand out, but remain easy to combine thanks to the natural colors.

Wool is a natural product. The shade and structure may therefore differ very slightly per pair or shipment. This is not a defect, but part of the material's natural appearance.

How thick is Hirsch Natur model 030?

Model 030 belongs to the thicker Norwegian socks by Hirsch Natur. The sturdy knit retains more air between the wool fibers, providing more insulation than a thin everyday sock.

The extra thickness does require space. These socks are best suited for roomy winter, hiking, or work boots. In snug-fitting sneakers or dress shoes, they may provide too much volume.

Always check if your toes can still move freely. A very thick sock in a shoe that is too tight can feel uncomfortable and may actually keep your feet less comfortably warm. Looking for a thinner model in the same green theme? Check out the thin Norwegian wool socks.

Suitable for outdoor enthusiasts, but not a technical hiking sock

Due to their warmth and sturdy quality, these socks are popular for wearing in boots and hiking shoes. However, they are not technical sports socks with separate cushioning zones, compression, or a synthetically reinforced heel and toe.

For a quiet forest walk or daily outdoor use, they can be wonderful, provided the shoes fit well. Do you walk long distances or is maximum durability your top priority? If so, compare these socks with the models in our wool hiking socks collection.

In our wool sock buying guide, we explain in more detail which sock fits your shoes and usage.

Natural warmth from 100% organic wool

Wool helps retain heat around your feet while also absorbing moisture without feeling clammy. This makes the material pleasant in changing temperatures and during activities where you alternate between movement and standing still.

The socks contain no synthetic reinforcement in the foot area. Therefore, you are consciously choosing the natural feel of pure wool. How soft or prickly the material feels varies per person. We cannot guarantee this in advance for every skin type.

Hirsch sizing advice: these socks run large

Hirsch Natur socks run generous and can become even roomier while being worn. If you are between two combined sizes, choose the smaller size. For example, if you wear shoe size 39 or 40, we usually recommend size 38/39.

The shaped heel of the sock should align approximately with your own heel. If it sits above your foot or there is a lot of extra knit at the toes, the sock is likely too big.

Socks that are too loose can slide or fold inside your shoes. This is not only less comfortable but also causes extra friction and can accelerate wear and tear.

An almost entirely wool cuff

In the upper part of the cuff, a few very fine elastic threads are incorporated. These are embedded in the wool knit and do not come into direct contact with the skin. They help keep the sock in place along your leg.

There is no nylon or elastane running through the rest of the sock. The foot section consists of pure wool and therefore fits less tightly than a synthetic sports or compression sock.

Real customer experiences: warmth and criticism of wear

Customer experience: one customer describes the socks as nice and warm and really likes the old-fashioned wool knit.

Customer experience: another customer finds the socks beautiful, warm, comfortable, and well-made, but is simultaneously disappointed in their lifespan. She quickly developed holes in the heel on several pairs, despite rotating different socks and only wearing them in roomy shoes. She considers the necessary repairs to be extra effort and a financial drawback.

We believe it is important to show both experiences honestly. How quickly wool socks wear out varies greatly per person, but a 100% wool sock can indeed develop a thin spot or a hole more quickly than a synthetically reinforced sock.

Organically produced does not mean indestructible

The term "durable" can mean two different things. These socks are made from organic wool and contain no synthetic reinforcement. That says something about the material and production method, but is no guarantee that they will last for years without repair for every wearer.

Pure wool is sensitive to repeated pressure and friction. The heel, ball of the foot, and toes in particular endure a lot. Your shoes, insoles, foot shape, calluses, toenails, and gait all influence the speed at which wear occurs.

For some people, the socks stay beautiful for multiple winters. For others, a thin spot can develop much faster, even when the socks are worn carefully. Normal wear and tear is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty.

How to reduce the risk of rapid wear

  • Choose the correct size so that the sock does not slide or bunch up in your shoe.
  • Wear the socks in shoes with sufficient space and a smooth interior.
  • Check insoles for rough, damaged, or worn areas.
  • Keep toenails short and rough calluses as smooth as possible.
  • Give the pair a rest after wearing them so the wool fibers can recover.
  • Regularly check heels, toes, and soles for thin spots.
  • Do not use these socks as slippers on a hard floor. They do not have a non-slip sole and direct contact with the floor causes a lot of extra friction. Wear well-fitting slippers over them indoors.

Repairing is sometimes part of pure wool socks

Do you notice the knit getting thinner somewhere? Then do not wait until a large hole forms. A thin spot is easier and neater to repair. This way, you can prevent the knit from fraying further.

In our blog Help, I have a hole in my wool sock you can read more about causes, prevention, and repairs. Darning wool, darning needles, and other tools can be found in our repair accessories for wool socks section.

    Airing is usually sufficient

Wool naturally stays fresh for a long time. Hang the socks out after wearing and preferably give them a day of rest. This allows the fibers to release moisture and regain their shape.

Do the socks still need to be washed? Then follow the wash label and use a real wool wash program at a maximum of 30 degrees with a low spin speed. Avoid standard wash programs, large temperature differences, and heavy agitation.

Use a small amount of suitable wool detergent with lanolin, such as Lanalicious. Do not use fabric softener, do not wring the socks out, and never put them in the dryer. Gently reshape them after washing and let them air dry lying flat.

    Wol is fantastisch

And just like that, you were gone!

    Was koud of lauw
