Hirsch Natur Norwegian wool socks grey/white
The classic among Norwegian socks. Grey, off-white, and a rich Scandinavian pattern that immediately brings to mind wooden cabins, thick sweaters, and winters where you mostly want to sit very close to the heater.
These sturdy socks from the Hirsch Natur 030 series are made from 100% organic wool. They are noticeably thicker and warmer than the thin grey-white 156 variant. Consequently, they are best suited for roomy shoes, boots, hiking boots, or slippers.

Grey-white: the most classic Norwegian combination
Heather grey forms the base of these socks. The pattern is knitted in a soft, off-white shade and consists of various geometric and Scandinavian-inspired motifs. The heel, toe, and cuff are kept in solid grey.
This understated combination pairs with almost any color of trousers or shoe. Grey-white is timeless, suitable for women and men, and striking without being loud. It is exactly what you expect from a good Norwegian sock: cozy, but not gaudy.
Wool is a natural product. As a result, color and texture may vary slightly per pair or shipment. This is characteristic of the material and gives each sock its own natural look.
Thick model 030 or thin model 156?
Hirsch Natur makes this grey-white Norwegian pattern in both a thick and a thin version. This 030 is the sturdy variant. The knit feels fuller and takes up significantly more space in your shoes.
The thick 030 is particularly suitable for cold days, roomy boots, hiking boots, and shoes where you still have enough room to move. The thin 156 is roughly comparable to an ordinary cotton sock and fits more easily into sneakers and fitted shoes.
A thicker sock is not always the best choice. If your shoes become too tight due to the sock, your toes may actually feel cold or uncomfortable. Are you unsure which thickness fits your shoes? Then read our wool sock buying guide.
Natural warmth of 100% organic wool
Wool traps air between its fibers, helping to retain warmth around your feet. At the same time, the material can absorb moisture without immediately feeling clammy. This makes these socks pleasant during cold days and when transitioning between indoors and outdoors.
The socks contain no synthetic reinforcement in the foot area. You are therefore choosing the natural feel of pure wool. Please keep in mind that everyone experiences wool differently. What feels wonderfully soft to one person might feel a bit itchy to sensitive skin.
Wool naturally stays fresh longer than cotton or synthetic materials. As a result, you generally do not need to wash the socks after every use.
Hirsch sizing advice: these socks run large
Hirsch Natur socks run generous and often become even roomier while being worn. If you are between two combined sizes, choose the smaller size. For example, if you wear size 39 or 40, we usually recommend size 38/39.
The shaped heel of the sock should sit roughly on your own heel. If it sits above your foot or there is a lot of material left over at the toes, the sock is likely too big.
A sock that is too large can bunch up in your shoe and slide while walking. This is not only uncomfortable but also causes extra friction and wear.
A cuff that helps keep the sock in place
Some very fine elastic threads are incorporated into the upper part of the cuff. These are embedded in the wool and do not come into direct contact with the skin. They help prevent the sock from sliding down during wear.
The cuff is not intended as a medical or pressure-free cuff. If you are prone to severely swollen legs, edema, or have very sensitive skin, a specialized wider model, such as a bed sock, may be more suitable. If in doubt, feel free to contact us.
Real customer experiences
Customer experience: customers describe these socks as warm, pleasant to wear, and nice to look at, among other things. One wearer says she wears them daily in the winter and regularly receives compliments on the pattern.
Customer experience: one customer uses the socks as bed socks and frequently lets them air out outside. Another customer warns that the socks can be slippery on smooth floors and advises wearing slippers indoors.
One customer mentions personally experiencing fewer issues with chilblains while wearing them. This is exclusively her own experience and not a medical claim. These socks do not prevent or treat chilblains, poor circulation, or other medical conditions. Please consult a doctor for persistent foot problems.
These socks are not slippers
The thick quality can feel tempting as house socks, but this version has no anti-slip sole. Consequently, there is a risk of slipping on smooth floors. Furthermore, walking directly on hard or rough floors causes a lot of extra friction.
Do you want to wear the socks at home? Then pull on well-fitting slippers over them. Ensure the inside of these is smooth so your foot doesn't constantly slide around.
Honest information about wear and tear
These socks are made of 100% wool and contain no nylon or polyester to reinforce the heel, toe, or sole. Pure wool is comfortable, but not indestructible. Pressure and friction can eventually lead to thin spots or holes.
How quickly this happens varies greatly. Some customers wear their socks for several winters, while others notice wear much sooner. Your shoes, insoles, foot shape, calluses, nails, and gait all influence this.
Regularly check the heel, toes, and ball of the foot. Ensure well-fitting shoes with a smooth interior and rotate different pairs of socks. Normal wear and tear is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty.
Repairing a thin spot in time
Do you notice that the knit is becoming thinner in a certain spot? Do not wait until a large hole forms. A thin spot is easier to reinforce and repair neatly.
In our blog Help, I have a hole in my wool sock, we explain why wool socks wear out and how you can mend them. Darning wool, darning needles, and other tools can be found in our repair accessories for wool socks.
Be sure to let your wool socks air out
Wool naturally possesses dirt and odor-resistant properties. Hang the socks out after wearing and preferably give them a day of rest. This allows the wool fibers to release moisture and regain their shape.
Must the socks be washed? Then follow the wash label and use a genuine wool wash cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees, with a low spin speed. A standard wash cycle causes too much movement and temperature fluctuations.
Use a small amount of suitable wool detergent with lanolin, such as Lanalicious. Do not use fabric softener, do not wring the socks out, and never put them in the dryer. Gently reshape them after washing and let them air dry flat.
