LANGERCHEN long wool winter coat for women RISANA
If we were to list only the technical features of the LANGERCHEN RISANA, you would probably think we were trying to sell you some super-practical outdoor jacket. Windproof, breathable, water-repellent, ventilation eyelets, handy pockets, and a two-way zipper. You know the type: a jacket that can truly do it all, but also very explicitly looks like it can do it all.
RISANA does things differently. This elegant wool city parka has all the smart features of a technical jacket but looks like a quiet, feminine wool winter coat. The exterior is made of organic wool, the lining of soft organic cotton jersey, and sandwiched between them is a thin PU membrane that protects against wind and rain.
The coat falls well over the hips, has a beautifully tailored silhouette, and a high collar that transitions into a hood. We have RISANA in several colors, including BURGUNDY, SENCHA, STEEL BLUE, and PLATINUM.

A city parka without the technical jacket vibe
RISANA has the practical features of a good outdoor coat, but fortunately lacks the shiny synthetic material, the contrasting zippers, and the small army of pockets. The open-cut edges and quietly concealed closure give the coat a modern, minimalist look.
The long seams follow the body beautifully and provide a feminine shape without the coat looking stuffy or overly formal. This makes RISANA just as easy to combine with dress pants or a dress as it is with jeans and sturdy boots.
It is a coat that you can cycle to work in, do your grocery shopping, walk through the city, and then head inside somewhere without needing to change. Technical when necessary, elegant when you look at it. We think that is an excellent division of labor.
Three layers, three different functions
The special fabric of RISANA is made up of three layers:
-
Exterior: organic wool for warmth and a natural look
-
Middle layer: a thin PU membrane that blocks wind and offers protection against rain
-
Interior: 100% organic cotton jersey that feels soft and comfortable
These layers are bonded together into one flexible fabric. As a result, RISANA feels like a wool coat and not like a classic raincoat. At the same time, it offers more protection against wind and changeable weather than a regular wool coat without a technical membrane.
What does a water column of 8,000 mm mean?
The fabric of RISANA has a water column of 8,000 millimeters. Such a test measures how much water pressure a material can withstand before moisture penetrates. A value of 8,000 mm means that the fabric itself can withstand a significant amount of rain.
That does not mean the entire coat is completely waterproof, however. The seams of RISANA are not taped. During prolonged or heavy rain, moisture can eventually seep in through the stitching.
For light to moderate rain showers, daily commuting, and a wet city stroll, RISANA is very suitable. For standing outside for hours in a downpour, a true raincoat remains the wiser choice. RISANA is a wool winter coat with serious protection against rain, not a diving suit with sleeves.
Why is there a membrane in a wool coat?
The membrane is a very thin layer of polyurethane located between the wool and the cotton lining. You cannot see it and you barely feel it, but it makes a big difference as soon as it gets windy or starts to rain outside.
The PU membrane helps prevent cold wind and raindrops from penetrating the fabric. At the same time, body heat and perspiration can be wicked away. This makes RISANA feel less stuffy or clammy than many fully sealed synthetic coats.
The membrane also gives the wool fabric extra stability without taking away all its elasticity. Wool can sag or deform locally during intensive use—think of a permanent impression of your bike saddle on the back of your coat. The technical middle layer helps RISANA maintain its shape better, even when you wear it often and cycle in it.
Wool is already quite smart by nature
Wool retains warmth but can simultaneously absorb and release moisture. This helps the material regulate your body temperature. You stay pleasantly warm without immediately feeling like you are in a mobile sauna every time the temperature changes.
The structure of wool fibers and natural wool fats also ensure that wool is somewhat water-repellent by nature. We call this natural wool fat lanolin. Because of it, raindrops do not immediately penetrate deep into the fibers.
Processed wool does not always contain the same amount of lanolin as untreated wool. With RISANA, the protection against rain therefore comes from the combination of the wool outer layer, the water-repellent finish, and the technical membrane.
But isn't PU a plastic?
Yes. Polyurethane is a plastic and the material is not biodegradable. A coat with a PU membrane therefore does not consist exclusively of natural materials. We believe it is important to be honest about that.
LangerChen uses the PU very purposefully as a thin functional layer. The membrane makes the coat windproof, breathable, and more resistant to rain. Furthermore, the brand opts for a PFC-free water-repellent finish, so that highly persistent fluorine compounds are not required.
Even a coat made of organic wool and cotton naturally has an environmental impact. The sustainable value of RISANA lies in the carefully chosen materials, the sturdy construction, the timeless design, and the fact that the coat is made to be worn for years. A good winter coat that comes back every season wins, in our view, by a wide margin over a closet full of temporary solutions.
High-closing collar and hood
The top of RISANA can be closed high around the neck. The collar continues into a fixed hood, so your neck and head are also protected when it is windy or raining.
If you wear the coat slightly more open, the top falls around your face like a generous collar. If you close the zipper and press studs completely, that same collar transforms into a sheltered hood construction. That makes RISANA practical without giving it the sporty look of a classic parka.
And yes, a scarf is still allowed, of course. Not because the coat does not do its job, but because a beautiful wool scarf is almost always a good idea.
A long winter coat that you can actually cycle in
RISANA features a two-way YKK zipper. It can be opened not only from the top but also from the bottom. This gives your legs more room to move when you get on your bike.
You can unzip the bottom of the coat a bit while your upper body remains warm and protected. This way, you do not have to bike into a headwind with the coat completely open, nor do you have to walk next to your bike with tiny penguin steps. Especially in Rotterdam, we do not consider that a superfluous technical detail.
Hidden closure and practical pockets
The two-way zipper is hidden behind a placket with concealed snap buttons. That extra layer helps keep the wind out and ensures the front of the coat remains sleek and clean.
The side pockets are neatly integrated into the seams. They offer space for your hands, phone, or keys without needing large pockets on the outside. For items you want to keep really safe, there is an internal pocket with a zipper.
There are small ventilation eyelets under the arms. These help dissipate excess heat and perspiration, for example when you are cycling hard and decide on the way that a headwind is apparently also a full workout.
BURGUNDY, SENCHA, STEEL BLUE, or PLATINUM?
We have RISANA in several colors, including:
-
BURGUNDY: a warm, deep color between wine red and brown
-
SENCHA: a calm, grayish green tone with a natural look

-
PLATINUM: a heathered gray shade that easily combines with almost any color
The model, material construction, and technical features are the same for all colors. Availability may vary by color and size.
Fit and sizing advice
RISANA has a feminine city parka fit. The long vertical seams give the coat shape and help it fall nicely along the body. The model is tailored but not so tight that you can only stand perfectly straight in it.
When choosing your size, consider what you want to wear under the coat. If you primarily wear RISANA over a blouse, shirt, or thin sweater, you need less extra room than if you need to be able to fit a thick wool winter sweater underneath.
Check especially if you have enough room to move in your chest, shoulders, and upper arms. You must be able to close the coat completely and move your arms forward comfortably. That is not only pleasant on the bike, but also during other exciting winter activities like carrying groceries and trying to get onto a crowded tram.
Doubting between two sizes? Then contact us or come try on RISANA in Rotterdam. Then we can look together at which size fits nicely while still offering enough room for your winter layers.
Is RISANA warm enough for winter?
The organic wool retains warmth and the membrane prevents cold wind from easily passing through the fabric. Due to the length of the model, your hips and upper legs are also protected. This makes RISANA very suitable for the autumn and for mild to normal Dutch winter days.
The coat does not have a thick padded lining. How warm it feels to you therefore depends on the outside temperature, how much you move, what you wear underneath, and how quickly you get cold.
Are you someone who gets cold easily, or do you stand still for long periods during harsh frost? Then combine RISANA with a warm wool sweater or another insulating layer. The advantage is that you can adjust how much warmth you need yourself, without having to walk around all winter in a huge, thick Michelin-man suit.
How to care for the RISANA wool coat
Wash RISANA as little as possible. Wool does not absorb odors quickly and usually does not need to be cleaned after just a few wears. Air the coat out regularly and gently brush away dry dirt with a soft clothing brush.
You can treat a small stain locally with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Dab gently and do not rub hard. Vigorous scrubbing can damage or felt the wool surface.
Did the coat get wet? Hang it on a wide, sturdy hanger and let it dry slowly at room temperature. You can turn RISANA inside out, so the lining can also air out well. Never place or hang the coat on or against a heater, and do not use a hairdryer.
Does the coat need to be fully cleaned? Always check the wash label first and follow the instructions carefully. Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or aggressive stain removers. These can damage the wool, the membrane, and the water-repellent finish.
If in doubt, it is best to take RISANA to a professional cleaner who has experience with wool coats with a technical membrane. Always let them know that the coat consists of multiple layers and has a water-repellent finish.
Frequently asked questions about LANGERCHEN RISANA
Is RISANA completely waterproof?
The fabric has a water column of 8,000 mm and can withstand rain well. However, the complete coat is not fully waterproof because the seams are not taped. During prolonged or very heavy rain, moisture can seep in through the stitching.
Can I wear RISANA during a regular rain shower?
Yes. RISANA is suitable for light to moderate rain showers and daily use in changeable weather. For prolonged heavy rain, we recommend a true raincoat.
Is the coat windproof?
Yes. The PU membrane helps prevent cold wind from passing through the fabric. The high-closing collar and hood also offer extra shelter around your neck and head.
Does the membrane breathe?
Yes. The membrane is designed to keep wind and rain out while allowing heat and perspiration to be wicked away. The ventilation eyelets under the arms help with this.
Is the lining synthetic?
No. The visible and tactile lining is made of 100% organic cotton jersey. Only between the wool outer layer and the cotton inner layer is the thin technical polyurethane membrane.
Can I cycle with RISANA?
Yes. Thanks to the two-way zipper, you can open the coat a bit from the bottom, giving your legs more room to move. The membrane also gives the wool fabric extra stability and helps it maintain its shape.
Does RISANA have a hood?
Yes. RISANA has a fixed hood that is beautifully integrated into the high-closing collar.
In what colors is RISANA available?
