LangerChen wool coat with membrane RISANA NAVY
LANGERCHEN long wool winter coat for women RISANA
This sustainable wool coat is truly ingenious! If I were to explain the technical details, you might think it’s one of those super practical (with all due respect) outdoor utility jackets. With all the little pockets, zippers, and high-tech material that is all that and a bag of chips. But made of plastic. Not this one. This one is just as ingenious, but made from fair and natural materials.
Want to know more about this wool coat? Got a minute?
This elegant wool City parka convinces with its minimalist design and details like raw-cut edges and a concealed snap-button closure. The organic wool used for the outer layer has a naturally water-repellent function, thanks to the oily layer that wool possesses by nature. We call it lanolin. The coat is "waterproof" up to 8,000 mm. This means it can handle a light to moderate rain shower. If it rains very heavily, the coat is less suitable because the seams are not taped.
There is a membrane between the outer layer and the lining. This membrane is what makes this coat as ingenious as that outdoor jacket I mentioned. It is made of polyurethane and makes the coat windproof, providing the material with stability without losing its elasticity. Normally, wool has a tendency to stretch out, or you might end up with saddle marks if you cycle a lot. Which you can do perfectly well in this coat.
The lining of this sustainable coat is made of 100% organic cotton jersey.
So, none of those nasty sweaty synthetic fabrics that the well-known outdoor jackets have. Furthermore, this coat is much more elegant, and that color, oh that color! Well, you get it: we are huge fans of Langerchen.
Furthermore, this fantastic and sustainable coat also features:
- High-closing collar with 2-way YKK zipper
- Zipper (which can be opened from the bottom up, so it doesn't matter if the coat is long and you want to cycle)
- Concealed snap-button closure
- Dividing seams with inset pockets
- Inside pocket with zipper
- Ventilation eyelets under the arms
- LangerChen "ton sur ton" logo on the left arm

Does that sound good or does that sound great? Alright then! Time to order!
Why does my LangerChen coat have a membrane?
You can’t see it, but it’s there: a very thin layer of polyurethane (PU) integrated into the coat. We call that layer a membrane, and it’s actually your coat’s secret superpower.
What does it do? Very simple: rain and wind cannot get through, but your own heat and perspiration can escape. This keeps you dry from the outside and the inside. So you don't get that stifling, "raincoat" feeling.
Why polyurethane?
I hear you thinking: “But PU, isn’t that plastic?” Correct. LangerChen consciously chooses this because the alternatives are often even worse for people and the environment. Think of Gore-Tex or other membranes with fluorocarbons (PFCs) – they are practically indestructible, but unfortunately also toxic to nature. Polyurethane is currently the most responsible choice for making a coat sustainably waterproof without exposing yourself to harmful substances.
How sustainable is that then?
A PU membrane is not biodegradable, but because LangerChen works with sturdy, timeless fabrics and top-quality finishes, you will wear the coat for years. And that is what makes the difference: one good coat that you wear for ten years is many times more sustainable than three fast-fashion rain jackets that fall apart after a season.
How do you care for such a coat?
-
Wash as little as possible (that saves wear and energy).
-
Use a mild, ecological detergent.
-
Just hang the coat out to dry after a rain shower; that is usually enough.
This keeps your membrane working optimally and keeps your coat looking beautiful.
