Thin wool socks that actually fit in regular shoes
The big advantage of the 156 series is the finer knit structure. These socks take up significantly less space than the thick Norwegian socks from the 030 series. As a result, they fit more easily into sneakers, lace-up shoes, ankle boots, and many formal shoes.
Various customers note exactly that difference. One customer describes them as "not too thick and not too thin." Another customer finds them thin enough for regular shoes, yet truly warm. A regular wearer mentions that the thicker Hirsch socks barely fit in her shoes, while these thin models are much easier to combine.
These are personal customer experiences, but they fit well with what this model was designed for: enjoying the properties of wool daily, without adding a thick layer to your shoe.
For which occasions are these socks suitable?
These thin wool socks are a great choice for daily use, at work, during a quiet walk, while traveling, or just at home in your slippers. Because of the neutral grey-white colors, they also fit easily under formal trousers.
For a long or intensive hike, we recommend a dedicated wool hiking sock. These should fit the foot more snugly and typically provide more cushioning and support in the areas where a lot of friction occurs while walking. This thin Norwegian sock is primarily a comfortable everyday sock.
Warm, but less prone to overheating
Wool insulates, but at the same time can absorb moisture without feeling wet or clammy right away. This helps to regulate the temperature around your feet. As a result, thin wool socks can feel warmer than thicker cotton socks, while taking up much less space in your shoes.
Moreover, wool holds onto odors less easily than many synthetic materials. You therefore usually don't need to wash these socks after every wear. Letting them air out is often enough to get them feeling fresh again.
One customer even mentions these grey-white socks are nice for almost the entire year. That, of course, remains personal: on a hot summer day, most people will prefer an even airier sock. However, in the autumn, winter, and on fresh spring or summer days, this thin model is particularly versatile.
Important sizing advice for Hirsch Natur
Hirsch Natur socks run large. Our experience in the shop is therefore that you are usually better off choosing one size smaller than your normal shoe size.
Do you, for example, wear shoe size 38? Then choose size 36/37. For shoe size 40 or 41, we usually advise size 38/39 or 40/41, depending on the shape of your foot and how snugly you prefer the sock to fit.
When trying them on, check the heel area. This should sit around your own heel and not slide upward. There should be sufficient room for movement at the toes, but there shouldn't be a clump of excess fabric.
Customer experiences also show that feet differ. One customer with size 41 found size 40/41 just right. Another customer with shoe size 38 chose size 36/37 and still found them on the large side. Do you have narrow feet or are you doubting between two sizes? Definitely choose the smaller option.
Why a good fit is extra important
A sock that is too large creates folds and can slide inside your shoe. That is less comfortable to walk in and causes extra friction. A sock that is too small, on the other hand, is constantly under tension, which means the heel and toes in particular can wear out faster.
Pure wool also becomes somewhat more supple while being worn. Therefore, do not expect a fit that is constantly pulled tight by synthetic elastane. The sock should fit snugly, but it should not squeeze your toes or ankle anywhere.
A cuff made of almost nothing but wool
In the top approximately five centimeters of the cuff, tiny elastic threads are knitted in. These are necessary to help keep the sock in place. They are completely incorporated into the knit and do not touch your skin. The material that rests against your feet and legs therefore remains purely natural.
The cuff should be comfortable, but this is not a special pressure-free or medical sock. Do you suffer from swelling, circulation problems, or cuffs that pinch easily? Then ask for personal advice and, in the case of medical conditions, consult a doctor or foot specialist.
Honest about wear of thin 100% wool socks
These socks contain no strong synthetic fibers. That gives them their natural wearing comfort, but also makes them more vulnerable to wear. A thin wool sock can logically wear through sooner than a thick model or a sock reinforced with polyamide.
Most wear occurs at the toes, heel, and ball of the foot. How quickly this happens depends on, among other things:
- the size and fit of the sock;
- the fit and interior of your shoes;
- rough nail edges or sharp calluses;
- your way of walking;
- how often and intensely you wear the socks;
- the way you wash and dry them.
Normal wear and tear is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the warranty. Fortunately, that does not mean you have to write off a sock with a thin spot immediately. A customer says she now makes little works of art out of darning and finds her repaired socks extra beautiful.
Check your socks regularly and reinforce a thin spot before a full hole appears. In our blog Hole in your wool sock? How to prevent and repair it, we explain step by step what you can do. Also check out our darning wool, darning needles, darning eggs, and darning mushrooms.
Do not use these socks as slippers
As tempting as it is: do not walk directly on a hard floor in these thin socks. Sand grains and other small debris act like sandpaper on the wool due to constant friction. As a result, thin spots and holes can appear much faster.
Therefore, wear them indoors in well-fitting slippers or house shoes. That is not only better for their lifespan but also safer: wool socks can be slippery on wooden floors and stairs.
How to make your thin wool socks last longer
- For Hirsch Natur, usually choose one size smaller.
- Make sure the heel and toes are in the right place.
- Wear them in well-fitting shoes without rough seams.
- Do not walk directly on hard floors in them.
- Alternate different pairs and give the wool a rest.
- Let the socks air out after every wear.
- Keep nails smooth and treat sharp calluses.
- Repair thin spots before a hole appears.
How to wash thin wool socks?
Wool socks usually do not need washing after every wear. Hang them out well and give them a day of rest. Wool loves fresh air and can therefore often be worn several times before washing is really necessary.
Are the socks visibly dirty or do they no longer feel fresh after airing? Then always follow the wash label. Wash them cold or lukewarm. If machine washing is allowed on the label, use only a dedicated wool wash program at a maximum of 30 degrees, with little movement and a low spin speed.
Use a small amount of suitable wool detergent with lanolin, such as our Lanalicious detergent for wool and silk. Do not use regular detergent, fabric softener, or a tumble dryer.
Do not wring out the socks. Gently press the water out, carefully reshape them, and let them air dry. Never place wet wool on a hot radiator: heat, friction, and temperature changes can cause the wool to shrink or felt.
A pair of socks to wear and to give as a gift
Grey and white is an easy combination when you want to give a pair of wool socks as a gift but don't know exactly what color someone wears. A customer mentions that she regularly gives and receives these thin Hirsch socks and always finds them a successful gift.
Just don't forget to mention the most important advice: Hirsch Natur runs large, and wool socks want to be aired, worn, and pampered above all else.
