FISHERMAN wool men's sweater JOEP STEEL WOOL made of pure merino wool
If you only want one good wool sweater in your wardrobe, dark grey is of course a suspiciously smart choice. The FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND JOEP STEEL WOOL is a classically knitted men's sweater made from 100% pure, mulesing-free merino wool. Warm, timeless, and easy to combine, but definitely not boring thanks to the speckled Donegal yarn.
STEEL WOOL is a deep, dark grey color that leans towards anthracite. In the yarn, you can see the small colored specks that are so characteristic of Donegal wool. This gives the sweater more depth than a completely solid grey sweater. Calm and rugged from a distance, full of small color nuances up close.

STEEL WOOL: dark grey with character
Don't be misled by the name STEEL WOOL: this is not a silver-grey or light heathered sweater. The color is actually deep dark grey and almost anthracite. A calm base color that you can effortlessly combine with denim, black, olive green, brown, sand, and actually everything that happens to be in your wardrobe already.
Because of the speckled wool, the color looks more vibrant than a standard anthracite sweater. Small lighter and colored fibers are incorporated into the dark grey. Very subtle, but just enough to give JOEP that recognizable Irish look. A basic, then, but one that clearly has something to see.
A rollneck without a high collar
Fisherman describes the neckline as a rollneck. In JOEP's case, this does not mean a high collar, but a round neck with a narrow rolled edge. The neckline stays low and is not tight around your neck.
The same relaxed rolled edge can be seen on the sleeves and the bottom of the sweater. That finish gives JOEP its robust, unaffected look. It's a sweater that looks good without seeming to try particularly hard. Some people could learn a thing or two from that.
How does the FISHERMAN JOEP fit?
JOEP has a regular, straight men's fit and fits nicely true to size. Therefore, in principle, choose the size you usually wear. The sweater fits neatly, but is not tight and offers enough room for a thin shirt or undershirt underneath.
Do you prefer your wool sweaters to be a bit looser or do you want to be able to wear a thicker layer underneath? Then you could consider one size up. Although JOEP is designed as a men's sweater, it can of course also be worn perfectly well by women. In that case, keep in mind a straight fit and somewhat longer sleeves.
Are you in doubt between two sizes? Then please contact us or come and try on the sweater in Rotterdam. We prefer to take an extra look with you than for you to be at home negotiating with a sleeve that ends somewhere halfway down your hand.
Pure merino with a real wool sweater feel
This Fisherman sweater is made of 100% pure merino wool. The wool is mulesing-free, as is the wool that Fisherman Out of Ireland uses for its sweaters. Mulesing is a practice where skin around the buttocks of a sheep is removed to prevent infestation by fly larvae. For this wool, that painful treatment has not been applied.
Merino wool retains heat well, but can simultaneously breathe and absorb moisture. This makes JOEP wonderful during cold days, without you immediately overheating every time you step inside.
The sweater is relatively coarse-knit and has a real wool feel. So don't expect a wafer-thin, smooth merino top. JOEP is a sturdy wool sweater with structure and character. Are you sensitive to wool? Then wear a thin shirt made of wool and silk or cotton underneath, or come and feel it with us first.
What is Donegal wool?
Donegal yarn is recognized by the small colored specks that are processed through the wool. During spinning, fibers in different shades are added to the yarn. With STEEL WOOL, those specks provide subtle lighter and colored accents in the dark grey base.
The specks are therefore not spots, lint, or production errors. They belong to the material and make every sweater more vibrant than a completely solid knit. From a distance, JOEP looks almost anthracite; up close, you see how many different shades are actually in the yarn.
Also available in two green shades
We have the FISHERMAN JOEP in three heathered colors:
-
STEEL WOOL: deep dark grey, almost anthracite
-
SCOTS PINE: a dark blue-green to petrol shade
-
SEAWEED: a calm olive to moss green color
STEEL WOOL is the most neutral of the three. Ideal if you are looking for a men's wool sweater that goes with absolutely everything, but still has more character than a regular solid grey sweater thanks to the Donegal yarn.
What do you do if the sweater starts to pill?
With a new wool sweater, small pieces of lint or balls can appear in the beginning. That is not strange and says nothing about the quality. Movement and friction cause loose fibers to come to the surface of the yarn. You often see this first under the arms, along the sides, or in places where a coat or bag rubs against the sweater.
Do not pull the lint off with your fingers. This can pull new fibers out of the knit and set the pilling off again. Better to use a Gleener lint comb. With that, you can carefully remove the loose fibers. After a few treatments, the pilling usually decreases by itself.
How to care for the JOEP merino sweater
Fortunately, you don't have to wash wool after every wear. First, hang JOEP outside for a night or by an open window. Merino wool is less prone to odors and is often fresh enough to wear again after a good airing.
Does the sweater need to be washed? Then use only a reliable cold wool wash program and a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent. Do not rub, do not wring, and do not put it in the dryer. Carefully reshape the damp sweater and let it dry flat on a towel.
Preferably store JOEP folded in the closet. A heavy wool sweater can stretch on a hanger at the shoulders or lengthwise. Do you want to know everything about caring for wool? Then check out Vera’s video on washing and caring for wool clothing.
