FISHERMAN men's wool sweater JOEP SEAWEED made of pure merino wool
SEAWEED might sound like we’re sending you straight into the seaweed, but this is actually a beautiful, calm olive green color. The FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND JOEP is a classic knit wool men's sweater made from 100% pure merino wool. Warm, sturdy, and timeless, with the colorful flecks that are so characteristic of Donegal yarn.
This wool men's sweater has a regular fit and a round neckline with a subtle rolled edge. The sleeves and hem are also finished with such a nonchalant rolled trim. This gives JOEP its rugged Irish look without the sweater appearing overly heavy or bulky. Just pair it with jeans, chinos, or corduroy pants and you’re ready to go. Sometimes clothing doesn't need to complicate your life.

SEAWEED: a heathered olive green color
The color SEAWEED is a deep olive-to-moss green shade. Not bright green and not so dark that it looks nearly black, but precisely that calm green that is surprisingly easy to combine. Small blue and other-colored flecks are incorporated into the yarn, making the color show something new every time you look closely.
SEAWEED pairs beautifully with dark blue denim, anthracite, brown, sand, and neutrals. This makes this green merino sweater very suitable as an everyday basic, but one with more character than just another plain one. A bit of Ireland in your wardrobe, without having to buy a sheep pasture to go with it.
A roll neck without a high collar
The term roll neck might make you think of a turtleneck, but JOEP does not have a high neck. The model features a round neck with a narrow rolled edge. The neckline remains low and does not sit tightly around your neck.
That same rolled finish is found on the sleeves and hem of the sweater. It gives the model its relaxed, slightly rugged look. Neat enough for work, but also wonderful for a brisk walk, a weekend getaway, or a Sunday where your schedule mainly consists of coffee.
How does the FISHERMAN JOEP fit?
The JOEP fits true to size and has a classic, straight men's fit. Therefore, you should generally choose the size you normally wear. The sweater fits nicely without being tight against the body and offers enough room to wear a thin shirt underneath.
Would you like to wear it a bit looser, or do you like combining the sweater with a thicker base layer? Then you might consider a size larger. Although JOEP is designed as a men's sweater, it can certainly be worn by women as well. Just keep the straight fit and slightly longer sleeves in mind.
Pure merino with an authentic wool feel
This Fisherman sweater is made from 100% pure merino wool. Wool retains heat well, but is simultaneously breathable and moisture-wicking. This makes the sweater feel cozy on cold days without turning you into a walking sauna as soon as you go indoors.
JOEP is a relatively chunky knit and feels like a real wool sweater. We therefore consciously do not label it as guaranteed itch-free. How wool feels on the skin differs from person to person. Are you sensitive to wool? Then wear a thin wool/silk or cotton shirt underneath. This gives you the warmth and appearance of the sweater without the coarser fibers directly on your skin.
Why are there colored flecks in the sweater?
The small flecks are part of the character of Donegal yarn. During spinning, fibers in different colors are processed into the yarn. In SEAWEED, you will see, among other things, small blue color nuances among the olive green.
These flecks are not lint, stains, or flaws in the material. In fact, they provide the lively, heathered look for which Irish knitwear is known. From a distance, the sweater looks like a calm green; up close, you discover all the small color nuances.
Also available in two other colors
We have the FISHERMAN JOEP in three heathered colors:
-
SEAWEED: a calm olive-to-moss green color with subtle flecks
-
SCOTS PINE: a deep blue-green to petrol shade
-
STEEL WOOL: a classic grey-heathered color
For the SEAWEED color, we also have a matching wool scarf and beanie from Fisherman Out of Ireland. This allows you to create a complete set in which the heathered color and the speckled Donegal yarn come together beautifully.
What do you do if the sweater starts to pill?
A new wool sweater can pill a bit at the beginning. Through friction, loose fibers work their way out of the yarn, creating small tufts or balls. You usually see this first under the arms, along the sides, or in places where a coat or bag rubs against the sweater.
Do not pull or pick at the fuzz. This will loosen new fibers and the process will start all over again. Instead, use a Gleener fabric shaver. This allows you to gently remove the balls without unnecessarily damaging the knit. After being treated a few times, the pilling usually diminishes on its own.
How to care for the JOEP merino sweater
Fortunately, wool does not need to be machine washed after every wear. Hang the sweater outside or by an open window for a night first. Often it is fresh enough to wear again by the next day. That is better for the wool, your energy bill, and anyone who has ever pulled a wool sweater out of the washing machine a few sizes too small.
Does JOEP need to be washed after all? Use only a reliable cold wool wash cycle and a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent. Do not rub, do not wring, and do not put it in the dryer. Gently pull the damp sweater back into shape and let it dry flat on a towel.
Store the sweater preferably folded in the closet. If you keep a heavy wool sweater on a hanger for a long time, it can stretch out at the shoulders or in length. Want to know more? Check out Vera's video on washing and caring for wool.
Frequently asked questions about the FISHERMAN JOEP SEAWEED
Is this sweater made entirely of wool?
Yes. The FISHERMAN JOEP is made from 100% pure merino wool and contains no synthetic fibers.
What color is SEAWEED exactly?
SEAWEED is a deep olive-to-moss green color. The Donegal yarn contains small colored flecks, including subtle blue nuances.
Is this a turtleneck?
No. JOEP has a low, round neckline with a subtle rolled edge. The name roll neck refers to this finish and not a high collar.
How does the JOEP fit?
The sweater fits true to size and has a straight, regular men's fit. In principle, choose your usual size.
Does the merino wool itch?
That differs per person. JOEP is a relatively chunky knit and has a true wool feel. If you are sensitive to wool, wear a thin shirt underneath or come by and try the sweater on with us first.
Can I wash the sweater in the washing machine?
Only if your washing machine has a reliable cold wool wash program. Airing it out is our preference. Always use special wool detergent, skip the spin cycle and the dryer, and let the sweater dry flat.
Are there matching accessories?
Yes. In the color SEAWEED, we also have a matching wool scarf and beanie from Fisherman Out of Ireland.
