FISHERMAN wool sweater in pure merino RUST
If you only want one good, warm wool sweater in your closet, it’s allowed to have a bit of color. The FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND JOEP RUST is a chunky knit men’s sweater made of 100% pure, mulesing-free merino wool. Warm, rugged, and strikingly beautiful thanks to the speckled Donegal yarn.
RUST is a deep, warm rust-orange color with small specks in shades including green, pink, and natural. From a distance, you see mostly that rich rust color; up close, you keep discovering more tones in the yarn. It’s exactly the kind of color that instantly turns a simple pair of jeans into a complete outfit.
JOEP is model FI600M from Fisherman Out of Ireland and belongs to the thicker wool sweaters in our collection. This is not a thin merino sweater, but a sturdy Irish sweater in which you can face winter with significantly more enthusiasm.

RUST: warm orange with Donegal specks
RUST is not a loud orange, but a deep, warm color reminiscent of autumn leaves, brick, and that last bit of evening sun. The yarn contains small specks in different colors. You can see green, pink, dark, and natural fibers, among others.
This gives the sweater much more depth than a solid-colored knit. RUST combines beautifully with denim, dark blue, olive green, anthracite, brown, and sand. Surprisingly, it goes with almost everything. Orange turns out to be a lot less complicated when a group of Irish knitters works with it.
A thick wool sweater for really cold days
JOEP is exceptionally thick and warmly knitted. The structure of the knit holds a lot of air and helps retain your body heat well. This makes it a wonderful sweater for cold autumn and winter days.
The sweater has a relaxed, straight fit and offers enough room to wear a shirt or a thin wool undershirt underneath. Despite the sturdy knit, the sweater doesn't feel stiff or heavy. It’s the kind of sweater you put on during a cold walk and then just keep wearing when you come back inside.
A roll-neck without a high collar
Fisherman describes the neckline as a roll-neck. In the case of JOEP, this does not mean a high collar, but a crew neck with a narrow rolled trim. The neckline stays low and does not sit tightly around your neck.
The same relaxed rolled edge is seen on the sleeves and at the bottom. This finish gives the sweater its rugged, unrefined look. Classic Irish knitwear, but without it feeling like you're on your way to a fisherman-themed costume party.
How does the FISHERMAN JOEP fit?
According to Fisherman Out of Ireland, JOEP has a relaxed fit. The sweater is straight and comfortable, with plenty of room around the upper body. In principle, choose the size you normally wear if you like a relaxed fit.
Would you like to wear the sweater a bit more fitted, or are you between two sizes? Then compare the sizes below with a well-fitting sweater from your own closet. Lay that sweater flat and measure it without stretching the knit.

Pure merino wool with a real wool feel
JOEP is made of 100% pure merino wool. The wool used is completely mulesing-free. Mulesing involves removing skin around the hindquarters of a sheep to prevent issues with fly larvae. This painful treatment has not been applied to this wool.
Merino wool retains heat well but can also breathe and absorb moisture. As a result, the sweater remains cozy without feeling clammy.
This sweater is thick and sturdily knitted and has a real wool feel. So don't expect a wafer-thin, smooth merino top. Are you sensitive to wool? Then wear a thin shirt made of wool and silk or cotton underneath, or come feel it in our shop first.
What is Donegal wool?
You recognize Donegal yarn by the small colored specks worked into the wool. During spinning, fibers in different shades are added to the yarn. In RUST, these specks provide small green, pink, dark, and natural accents in the warm orange base.
Therefore, the specks are not stains, loose fluff, or manufacturing errors. They belong to the yarn and give every sweater its lively, Irish appearance.
JOEP is available in four colors
-
RUST: a deep, warm rust-orange color with colored specks
-
STEEL WOOL: deep dark gray, almost anthracite
-
SCOTS PINE: a dark blue-green to petrol tone
-
SEAWEED: a calm olive to moss green color
RUST is the warmest and most pronounced color of the four. It stands out, but because of the deep tone and the speckled yarn, it is surprisingly easy to combine.
What do you do if the sweater starts to pill?
Small pieces of fuzz or balls can appear on a new wool sweater at first. That is a natural property of wool and says nothing about the quality. Movement and friction cause loose fibers to come to the surface. You often see this first under the arms, along the sides, or in places where a jacket or bag rubs against the sweater.
Do not pull the fuzz off with your fingers. This can pull new fibers out of the knit. Instead, carefully use a Gleener fabric shaver. After a few maintenance sessions, the pilling usually decreases on its own.
How to care for the JOEP merino sweater
Fortunately, you almost never have to wash wool. After wearing, hang JOEP outside or near an open window for a night. Merino wool is less prone to absorbing odors and, after airing out well, is often fresh enough to wear again.
Does the sweater need to be washed? Choose a cool hand wash or a reliable cold wool-wash cycle. Use a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent. Do not rub, do not wring, and never put it in the dryer.
Gently pull the damp sweater into shape and let it dry flat on a towel. Afterwards, it is best to store JOEP folded. A thick wool sweater can stretch on a hanger at the shoulders or in length.
