This is one of those skirts that you will likely wear much more often in winter than you think beforehand. The AVA by MADNESS is made of organic boiled wool: pleasantly warm, soft, sturdy enough to keep its shape nicely, and at the same time wonderfully uncomplicated. No zipper. No buttons. Just: up, pull it over your hips, and you're done. We love that.
And the fit is truly great. The AVA falls beautifully smooth along the body without being so tight that you see every line. Boiled wool has a natural sturdiness, and that is exactly why this skirt provides such a beautiful silhouette.
Why is the MADNESS AVA such a lovely wool skirt?
Because this is essentially the winter version of that easy little skirt that you pull out of the closet thoughtlessly in the morning. Only made of wonderful organic wool. The waistband is comfortable and elastic, and because there are no zippers or other fasteners, you can just pull it on.

How does the MADNESS AVA wool skirt fit?
The AVA has a beautifully fitted but non-constricting cut. In the photos, I am wearing a size 42. On me, the skirt falls above the knee and fits nicely at the waist and hips.
Because you don't have a zipper that needs to fit just right, the skirt feels much easier to wear than many classic wool skirts. The waistband gives way: just pull it on and go.
What is boiled wool?
Boiled wool is made more compact through a special process. This creates that characteristic soft, slightly felted structure that you can clearly see in the detail photo. The fabric is denser and sturdier than a regular knit, but retains the fine properties of wool.
The result is exactly what you want from a skirt like the AVA: warm, soft, and shape-retaining, without creating a thick, bulky winter skirt.
What colors is the MADNESS AVA available in?
We have the AVA in two colors: a gorgeous deep blue and a warm burgundy shade. Both are incredibly easy to combine, but with a completely different effect.
Blue is, of course, a color that goes with almost everything. The burgundy color is a bit warmer and looks beautiful with pink, red, rust, cream, and all kinds of autumn tones, for example.
How do you style this wool skirt?
You can really go in any direction with this. In the photos, I am wearing the AVA neatly with a colorful blouse and heels, but please don't just label it as a 'formal skirt'.
We think it is just as nice with a lovely wool sweater, tights, and a pair of sturdy boots. Or with a turtleneck, cardigan, blouse, or wool longsleeve. This allows you to easily wear the same skirt to work, to dinner, and just on a regular weekday.
Is a boiled wool skirt warm?
Yes! And that is exactly why we love wool skirts so much in autumn and winter. Wool is naturally temperature-regulating, and the compact structure of boiled wool provides plenty of warmth without needing a massively thick layer of fabric.
With a good pair of wool tights underneath, you have a wonderful winter combination.
How do you wash the MADNESS AVA wool skirt?
The nice thing about wool is that you don't have to wash it after every wear at all. Airing it out is often enough. That is better for the wool, better for your clothes, and saves you a lot of laundry.
Does the AVA need to be washed after all? Always follow the care label and use a suitable wool detergent, such as Lanalicious wool detergent. Avoid large temperature differences, rubbing, and wringing, and let the skirt dry flat in shape after washing.
Can boiled wool pill?
With natural wool fibers, some pilling can occur over time due to friction, for example in places where a bag or coat rubs against the fabric. That is normal and says nothing about the quality of the wool.
You can carefully remove any fuzz with our Gleener fabric shaver. This way, you keep the wool looking beautiful for years.
Why do we think the AVA is such a great basic skirt?
Because there really isn't anything complicated about it. And that is exactly what makes it so good. Beautiful wool, great fit, nice and warm, and no hassle with zippers. You pull it on, throw a sweater or blouse over it, and your outfit is ready.
One of those skirts you think you're buying 'for nice occasions' and then just ends up coming out of your closet every single week. Exactly our kind of clothing.
