Exactly what you would expect from a scarf made in Ireland, where they certainly have some experience with wind, rain, and other lovely outdoor weather.

A generous scarf that keeps you truly warm
With a length of approximately 190 cm and a width of about 20 cm, you can comfortably wrap the scarf around your neck once or twice. You can, of course, also leave it hanging loosely over a coat. That showcases the cable pattern beautifully, though during a Rotterdam gust of wind, we would only recommend that if you hold onto it firmly.
The scarf is sturdily and densely knitted but remains supple enough to wear comfortably around the neck. Due to the natural properties of wool, it retains heat while simultaneously absorbing and releasing moisture. This makes wool feel less clammy than many synthetic materials.
What is Donegal merino wool?
You recognize Donegal wool by the small colored flecks in the yarn. These give the scarf its familiar tweed-like effect and ensure that even the darkest colors do not look flat or dull. The yarn is spun in Kilcar, County Donegal, and the scarf is made in Ireland.
This wool has a bit more structure and character than very fine, smooth merino wool. How wool feels on the skin is personal. Many people find this scarf comfortable, but are you very sensitive to wool or do you always wear a scarf directly against your bare neck? Then by all means, come and feel and try it on in our shop. We prefer to honestly promise a little less than to be overly enthusiastic online claiming that truly nobody will ever feel anything.
Which color suits you best?
SCOTS PINE is a deep blue-green color with subtle flecks. Calm, unique, and very easy to combine with dark blue, gray, neutral tones, and brown.
SILENT NIGHT is a deep navy blue and looks almost solid from a distance. Up close, you can see the lighter and warm flecks in the yarn. A true classic that goes with absolutely everything.
SEAWEED is a rugged moss-to-olive green shade. Beautiful with camel, rust brown, denim, black, and other natural colors.
BLACK CURRANT is a rich dark purple berry color with pink, red, and blue flecks. For those who want color but don't feel like navigating the winter looking like a fluorescent road sign.
Make it a complete set
We also have matching woollen hats from FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND in stock. The hats are made in the same characteristic colors and therefore match the scarves beautifully. Handy if you love wearing a complete set, but also very suitable as a gift. Though we completely understand if you prefer to keep the set for yourself after receiving it.
Can Donegal wool pill?
With natural wool, small pills or balls can form due to friction, especially in areas where the scarf rubs against a coat, beard, or bag. That is not an unusual phenomenon and does not automatically say anything negative about the quality.
You can gently remove loose pills with a Gleener fabric shaver. Do not pull them out of the knit with your fingers, as you can unnecessarily damage the wool fibers.
How to care for a pure merino wool scarf
Fortunately, you don't have to wash wool often. Hang the scarf outside regularly to air out, and treat small stains locally whenever possible.
Is a full wash necessary after all? Wash the scarf cold on a reliable wool cycle and use a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent with lanolin. Do not wring it out and do not tumble dry. Carefully pull the scarf into shape after washing and let it dry flat. This keeps the cable pattern looking good and prevents the knit from stretching.
