FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND wool beanie made of 100% Donegal merino wool
A good winter beanie needs to do two things above all: keep your head warm and make you actually want to wear it. Fortunately, this wool beanie from FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND manages to do both. No strange pom-poms, no oversized logos, and no design that suddenly turns your head into the shape of a garden gnome. Just a beautiful, warm, and timeless beanie.
The beanie is made of 100% Donegal merino wool and features a sturdy ribbed structure with a wide folded cuff. The flecked yarn gives every color that recognizable Irish tweed effect. We have the beanie in the same four colors as the matching scarves: SCOTS PINE, SILENT NIGHT, SEAWEED, and BLACK CURRANT.

A warm beanie without the fuss
The beanie fits nicely around the head and has a wide folded edge that provides extra warmth for your forehead and ears. Thanks to the rib knit, the fabric moves with you and shapes itself to your head while worn.
You can wear the cuff higher or lower, depending on how much coverage you prefer. The design is classic and entirely unisex. It pairs well with almost any winter coat and can be worn just as easily by men as by women.
What is Donegal merino wool?
Donegal wool is recognizable by the small colored flecks in the yarn. These give the beanie a lively, tweed-like appearance. This gives even the darker colors much more depth than a standard plain wool beanie.
The merino wool retains heat, but can also absorb and release moisture. This helps to keep your head warm without the material feeling clammy. This is quite pleasant when you are on the go, cycling, or suddenly end up lingering in a store for way too long because you only needed to grab some milk.
Donegal merino wool has a bit more structure than very fine, smooth merino wool. How wool feels on the skin is personal. If you are very sensitive around your forehead or ears, feel free to come and try the beanie on in Rotterdam first.
Four colors with that typical Irish flecked yarn
SCOTS PINE is a deep blue-green color with small natural-colored flecks. Unique, but easy to combine with navy blue, gray, brown, and natural tones.
SILENT NIGHT is deep navy blue, making it the most classic color. Calm and dark from a distance, and full of subtle flecks up close.
SEAWEED is a cool moss-to-olive green shade. Beautiful with earth tones, camel, denim, black, and rust brown.
BLACK CURRANT is a rich dark purple berry color with pink, red, and blue flecks. Plenty of color, without the beanie starting to overwhelm your entire outfit.
Add a matching scarf?
We also have a matching wool scarf from FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND for every color. The beanie and scarf are made from the same characteristic Donegal yarn and form a beautiful set together.
You can, of course, also mix and match colors. For example, SILENT NIGHT looks very beautiful with SCOTS PINE, and BLACK CURRANT combines surprisingly well with SEAWEED. No one has ever decreed that a hat and scarf must be an exact match. And if someone did, we simply won't listen to them.
Can the beanie pill?
With natural wool, friction can cause small fuzz or pills to form. This happens especially along the folded cuff or in places where the beanie rubs against a hood. This is part of natural wool fibers and does not automatically mean the quality is poor.
You can carefully remove loose pilling with a Gleener fabric shaver. Try not to pull them out of the knit with your fingers, as this can damage the fibers.
How to care for a pure merino wool beanie
A wool beanie hardly needs to be washed. Let it air out outside regularly and preferably treat small stains locally.
Does the beanie need to be washed completely? Use a cold and reliable wool wash cycle with a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent with lanolin. Do not wring and do not tumble dry. Carefully reshape the beanie after washing and let it dry flat. Do not place it on the heater, no matter how tempting that quick-dry action seems.
