FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND wool beanie made of 100% Donegal merino wool
A good winter hat needs to do two things above all else: keep your head warm and ensure that you actually want to wear it. Fortunately, this wool beanie from FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND manages both. No strange pom-pom, no over-the-top logo, and no design that suddenly makes your head look like a garden gnome. Just a beautiful, warm, and timeless beanie.
The beanie is made of 100% Donegal merino wool and features a sturdy ribbed structure with a wide folded cuff. The flecked yarn gives every color that recognizable Irish tweed effect. We carry the beanie in the same four colors as the matching scarves: SCOTS PINE, SILENT NIGHT, SEAWEED, and BLACK CURRANT.

A warm beanie without the fuss
The beanie fits snugly around the head and has a wide folded edge that provides extra warmth for your forehead and ears. The rib stitch allows the knit to move with you and conform to your head as you wear it.
You can wear the cuff a little higher or lower, depending on how much coverage you prefer. The model is classic and completely unisex. It goes with almost any winter coat and can be worn just as easily by men as by women.
What is Donegal merino wool?
Donegal wool is recognizable by the small colored flecks in the yarn. These give the beanie a lively, tweed-like appearance. This gives even the dark colors much more depth than a standard solid-colored wool hat.
Merino wool retains heat but can also absorb and release moisture. This helps to keep your head warm without the material feeling clammy. That’s quite nice when you’re on the go, cycling, or suddenly end up hanging around in a store too long because you only really needed to pick up milk.
Donegal merino wool has a bit more structure than very fine, smooth merino wool. How wool feels on the skin is subjective. Are you very sensitive around your forehead or ears? Feel free to come try on the beanie first in Rotterdam.
Four colors with that typical Irish flecked yarn
SCOTS PINE is a deep blue-green color with small natural color flecks. Distinctive, yet easy to combine with navy blue, gray, brown, and natural tones.
SILENT NIGHT is a deep navy blue, making it the most classic color. Quiet and dark from a distance, and full of subtle flecks up close.
SEAWEED is a rugged moss-to-olive green shade. Beautiful with earth tones, camel, denim, black, and rust brown.
BLACK CURRANT is a rich, dark purple berry color with pink, red, and blue flecks. Plenty of color, without the beanie starting to overwhelm your entire outfit.
Add a matching scarf?
We also have a matching wool scarf from FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND for every color. The beanie and scarf are made from the same characteristic Donegal yarn and together form a beautiful set.
You can, of course, also mix and match colors. For example, SILENT NIGHT looks very nice with SCOTS PINE, and BLACK CURRANT combines surprisingly well with SEAWEED. No one ever established that a beanie and scarf have to be an exact match. And if someone did, we just don't listen to them.
Can the beanie pill?
With natural wool, small pills or balls can form due to friction. This happens mainly along the folded edge or in places where the beanie rubs against a hood. This is characteristic of natural wool fibers and does not automatically mean the quality is poor.
You can carefully remove loose pilling with a Gleener fabric shaver. It is better not to pull them out of the knit with your fingers, as you might damage the fibers.
How to care for a pure merino wool beanie
A wool beanie hardly needs to be washed. Let it air out outside regularly and preferably treat small stains locally.
If the beanie does need to be fully washed, use a cold and reliable wool wash cycle with a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent with lanolin. Do not wring and do not put it in the dryer. Carefully pull the beanie into shape after washing and let it dry flat. Do not place it on the radiator, however tempting that quick-dry action may seem.

Is this a women's or men's beanie?
The beanie is unisex. The simple design, the ribbed structure, and the four colors are suitable for both women and men.
