The FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND YMKJE is a warm women's cardigan made from 100% mulesing-free Donegal merino wool. You will instantly recognize this wool by its speckled yarn, deep colors, and slightly rugged character.
YMKJE features a V-neck, large buttons, and subtle cable details on the shoulders, along the sleeves, and on the back. It’s classic Irish knitwear, but in a cardigan that you can wear just as easily over jeans as over a dress.
This variation is called JADE: a fresh, greyish jade-blue color with tiny specks in shades including red, blue, green, and natural. We also have YMKJE in the purple of BLACKCURRANT and the dark blue-green of SCOTS PINE.

How does the FISHERMAN cardigan YMKJE fit?
YMKJE is intentionally designed with a more relaxed fit. This makes it easy to wear a blouse, long-sleeve, or thin wool turtleneck underneath without the cardigan feeling tight around your arms or torso.
I am wearing size L in the fitting photo. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one. If you prefer to wear the cardigan extra loose and comfortable, you can choose your usual size.
The cardigan falls to about the hip and has wide ribbed trims on the sleeves and bottom. These give the design structure and ensure it maintains its shape despite the more relaxed fit.
Note: in the fitting photo, I am wearing the purple BLACKCURRANT. The style and fit are exactly the same, but with this option, you will receive the jade-blue color. You can get a good look at the color and the speckled structure of JADE in the detail photo.
What is Donegal merino wool?
Donegal wool is known for the small colored specks in the yarn. This gives the knitwear much more depth than a completely solid-colored cardigan. With JADE, the yarn has a soft blue-green base with playful specks in various colors. Up close, you see something new every time, while from a distance, the cardigan looks surprisingly calm.
Merino wool retains heat but can also absorb and release moisture. This makes a wool cardigan feel cozy without quickly becoming clammy. Perfect for winter, but also very useful as a jacket substitute on crisp spring and autumn days.
This Donegal merino wool is spun a bit more coarsely and firmly than very fine, smooth merino wool. That gives the cardigan its character and creates a beautiful texture. Are you sensitive to wool against your skin? Wear a thin long-sleeve, blouse, or turtleneck underneath.
JADE, SCOTS PINE or BLACKCURRANT?
JADE is a fresh, greyish jade-blue color. Lighter than petrol and a bit more exciting than plain light blue. Because of the colored specks, JADE combines surprisingly easily with denim, natural tones, dark blue, burgundy, brown, and other green and blue shades.
SCOTS PINE is a deep blue-green color. Calm and easy to combine, but definitely not boring thanks to the speckled yarn. It looks beautiful with dark denim, natural tones, rust brown, and other green shades.
BLACKCURRANT is a rich, purple berry color with pink, red, and dark specks. Very beautiful with dark blue, grey, pink, burgundy, and black. For those who want to wear color without looking like a walking highlighter.
Styling tip from Vera
Combine the jade-blue YMKJE with dark blue jeans or wide-leg trousers in natural, rust brown, or burgundy. Also nice: wear it open over a simple dress or a fine wool turtleneck.
Do you want to add a bit more shape? Tuck the front edge very slightly into your pants. Such a small French tuck often does more than you think. You can, of course, also wear the cardigan completely buttoned up as a sweater.
Pilling in wool is not necessarily a quality issue
Because this wool is spun a bit more coarsely, small pills or bobbles may form, especially in the beginning, in places where the fabric rubs against itself, a bag, or a coat. This is part of natural wool fibers and does not mean there is anything wrong with the cardigan.
Gently remove loose pills with a Gleener fabric shaver. Try not to pull or pluck at them, as this can damage the fibers. After a few maintenance sessions, pilling usually decreases on its own.
How do you wash a Donegal merino wool cardigan?
Ideally as little as possible. Wool is naturally dirt- and odor-resistant, so airing it out outdoors is often sufficient. A small stain can be treated locally.
If YMKJE does need a full wash, wash the cardigan cold on a reliable wool cycle and use a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent with lanolin. Do not wring and never tumble dry.
After washing, gently pull the cardigan into shape and let it dry flat. Store it preferably folded so it doesn't stretch out on a clothes hanger.

That varies from person to person. The wool is coarser and has more texture than very fine merino wool. Most people wear this cardigan over a shirt, blouse, or turtleneck. If you are sensitive to wool, we always recommend trying it on first.
Can the wool cardigan go in the washing machine?
Only if your washing machine has a reliable cold wool cycle. Use a suitable wool detergent, do not leave the cardigan wet in the drum for long, and always dry it flat. If in doubt, airing it out is the safest choice.
