Why woolen underwear?
Wool is not just for warmth. High-quality merino wool actually helps your body maintain a consistent temperature. The fiber can absorb moisture without feeling clammy and is less prone to absorbing odors than cotton or synthetic fabrics. This makes woolen underwear great in winter, but also during variable weather, while traveling, for outdoor work, and for people who sweat easily.
The main benefits:
- warm when you are cold, without causing immediate overheating;
- absorbs moisture and is less likely to feel wet and clammy;
- usually does not need to be washed after every wear;
- is thin enough to be worn invisibly under your regular clothing;
- remains comfortable while sitting still or moving around.

100% wool or wool-silk?
100% wool: cozy and slightly sturdier
Underwear made of 100% fine wool is wonderful if warmth is the primary reason for wearing it. The material generally feels a bit sturdier and thicker than wool-silk. It is a good choice for those who are always cold, outdoor work, hiking, camping, and other moments when you want to retain heat for a long time.
Wool-silk: thin, supple, and soft
In wool-silk, fine merino wool is blended with silk. For many models in our collection, the ratio is 70% wool and 30% silk; always check the composition of the specific product. The silk makes the fabric smoother, more supple, and subtly shiny. As a result, wool-silk drapes beautifully under clothing and is the most pleasant introduction to woolen underwear for many people.
Wool-silk is not automatically “less warm.” Precisely because it is thin and comfortable, it is easy to wear directly against the skin. And that is important: a first layer works best when it fits snugly and can effectively regulate body heat and moisture.
Is woolen underwear itchy?
The thick, coarse wool of the past cannot be compared to the fine merino wool used for underwear. However, sensitivity is personal. Some feel nothing at all, while others may notice even very fine wool at first. Wool-silk usually feels the smoothest and is therefore often our first choice for sensitive skin.
Do you have eczema, a wool allergy, or highly reactive skin? If so, we recommend visiting our store in Rotterdam to feel and try it on first. When in doubt, you can start with a camisole: it covers a smaller surface area than a longsleeve, making it a great way to discover how your skin reacts.
Which style suits you best?
Camisole
A wool or wool-silk camisole is the most versatile first layer. It keeps your torso warm without extra fabric on your arms. Ideal under a blouse, dress shirt, sweater, or dress. A longer model usually stays tucked into your pants better; thin straps hide nicely under clothing.

Short-sleeved T-shirt
A T-shirt also provides warmth around the shoulders and upper arms. It is comfortable under a dress shirt, workwear, or sweater, and is also easy to wear as a regular shirt. Choose a form-fitting model if you really want to use it as a base layer.

Longsleeve
A longsleeve is the best choice when your entire upper body could use warmth. Think of cycling, outdoor work, hiking, winter sports, or a cold workspace. For night sweats, too, a thin wool-silk longsleeve can feel more pleasant than cotton, as moisture does not stay cold and clammy against your skin.
See longsleeves for men or choose a long-sleeved shirt from the women's collection.
Brief or boxer
A wool-silk brief or boxer feels warm without becoming stifling and is pleasant if you are easily bothered by clammy cotton. Pay attention to the style of the waistband and leg openings: underwear should fit snugly but never pinch.

Leggings or long johns
Thin woolen leggings fit easily under trousers and make a huge difference in the cold. Wool-silk leggings are also a nice extra layer under a skirt or dress. For sleeping, camping, and winter sports, combine them with a longsleeve.

Which underwear should you choose if you sweat easily?
In that case, wool can be very pleasant. Wool absorbs water vapor before it sits on your skin as sweat and holds onto odors less easily. Consequently, it often feels fresh for longer than cotton and many synthetic materials. Choose a thin, form-fitting quality that does not pinch. For daily use, wool-silk is often the best choice for this purpose.

Woolen underwear for women, men, and children
For women
For women, it is not just warmth that is important, but also what your outer clothing requires. Under a deep neckline, for example, you might choose a camisole with a lower cut; under a dress, a smooth longsleeve or leggings might be ideal. Our collection ranges from camisoles and shirts to briefs, boxers, leggings, and nightwear.

For men
For men, a form-fitting camisole, T-shirt, and longsleeve are the most popular styles. They work as an invisible layer under a dress shirt or sweater, but also as a functional base layer for outdoor work and sports. Pay attention to the sleeve length of a T-shirt if it should not be visible under a dress shirt.
For children
Children constantly switch between running, sitting still, and being indoors or outdoors. Wool-silk helps regulate those temperature changes and feels soft and light. A camisole or shirt is a good base; add a longsleeve and leggings in the cold. Do not choose too large a size: a loose layer allows cold air to flow along the body more easily and does not sit as nicely under clothing.

How should woolen underwear fit?
Woolen underwear works best when it is quite close to the skin. It does not need to pull or pinch, but a very loose shirt insulates and regulates less effectively as a first layer. Keep three things in mind:
- Usage: as a base layer, choose form-fitting; if worn as a visible shirt, it can be a bit looser.
- Body length: check if the model is long enough in the torso, sleeves, and legs.
- Brand and model: sizes may vary. Therefore, always check the size advice for the specific product.
Are you between two sizes? Don't just look at the number on the label, but especially at your chest, waist, and hip measurements and how you intend to wear it. We are happy to help you compare in our store or remotely.
Which brand should you choose?
We don't choose brands because one brand is best for everyone, but because the fit, material, and models differ.
- Engel: a large selection of fine woolen and wool-silk base layers for women, men, babies, and children.
- Hocosa: reliable underwear made from natural materials, with various qualities and fits.
- Living Crafts: comfortable basics made from natural materials; check per model whether it is wool, wool-silk, or another composition.
The precise composition and fit are therefore always stated with the product. You don't have to choose a brand first: it is better to start with your intended use, desired warmth, and preferred model.
How many pieces do you need?
You don't need to replace your entire underwear drawer at once. Start with one camisole, T-shirt, or longsleeve and discover when you prefer to wear it. Because wool holds odors less easily, you can often wear it several times. Let it air out in between. With two or three favorite basic pieces, you can usually manage well.
Washing woolen underwear
Wool likes rest. Airing it out is often sufficient. If it must be washed, always follow the care label and choose a proper wool wash program: little movement, a low temperature, and a low spin speed. Use a mild wool detergent containing lanolin, such as Lanalicious detergent for wool and silk. Do not use regular detergent, fabric softener, or a dryer. After washing, carefully reshape the garment and let it dry flat or hanging neatly in the air.
Also read our detailed advice on washing and caring for wool. A wool wash program is different from just a low temperature: specifically, motion and an incorrect transition from warm to cold water can cause wool to felt.

Frequently asked questions about woolen underwear
Can you wear woolen underwear every day?
Yes. Let it air out after wearing if possible and rotate. Because wool holds odors less easily, it usually does not need to be washed after every wear.
Is woolen underwear only for winter?
No. A thin wool-silk layer also helps during changing temperatures and warm weather. Read more in Why wool is perfect for the summer.
Can woolen underwear go in the washing machine?
Often yes, provided the care label allows it and you use a proper wool wash program and a suitable wool detergent. Not every “30-degree” wash is safe for wool.
Does woolen underwear shrink?
Wool can shrink or felt due to heat, friction, and temperature fluctuations. By using a correct wool wash program, low spin speeds, and air drying, you greatly reduce that risk.
Is wool-silk suitable for hot flashes and night sweats?
Many customers find the combination of temperature regulation and moisture absorption very pleasant. It does not prevent hot flashes, but it can help you feel clammy or cold for less time.
Do you wear a brief under woolen leggings?
That is personal preference. Leggings are usually worn as a warm base layer and not as a replacement for briefs or boxers.
