Why wool socks?

Wool helps regulate the temperature around your feet. The fiber can absorb moisture without feeling wet or cold immediately and holds onto odors less than many synthetic materials. That is why wool socks are not only nice when it is freezing. They can also stay more comfortable during hiking, working, and traveling when your feet get warm or start to sweat.

Good wool socks:

  • retain warmth without trapping heat directly, causing your feet to overheat;
  • absorb moisture and feel less clammy;
  • usually do not need to be washed after every wear;
  • are available from very thin to sturdy and thick;
  • can fit snugly around the foot due to their elasticity.

Thin or thick wool socks?

Thin wool socks

Thin socks fit in regular sneakers, lace-up shoes, dress shoes, and many ankle boots. They are suitable for daily use and pleasant for people who want the properties of wool but do not need an extra-thick layer in their shoe. A thin wool sock can feel warmer than a thicker cotton sock because wool regulates moisture and temperature differently.

Thick wool socks

Thick socks provide more insulation and cushioning. They are wonderful in spacious boots, clogs, work shoes, or just at home. But be careful: when a thick sock makes your shoe too tight, it can actually have the opposite effect. The pressure reduces space for warm air and can impede circulation. Therefore, cold toes do not always need a thicker sock; sometimes a more spacious shoe is the solution.

Which wool socks suit your needs?

For every day

Choose a thin or medium-thick sock that fits in your shoe without wrinkles. Do you wear tight sneakers or dress shoes? Check the thickness, especially at the toes and heels. For a loose boot, the sock can be a bit bulkier.

For hiking

A hiking sock should fit well and stay in place. Wrinkles increase the risk of friction and blisters. Our wool hiking socks are made of 100% wool: exactly how we like it. Choose the thickness in conjunction with your hiking boots. A heavy sock in a tightly fitting shoe is rarely comfortable.

For winter sports

Ski socks are higher, fit smoothly around the lower leg and foot, and should not be folded over anywhere. One well-fitting sock is usually better than two socks layered: double layers can shift, wrinkle, and cause extra pressure. Choose the sock in accordance with the fit of your ski or snowboard boots.

For boots and work shoes

Choose a sock that rises above the rim of the shoe and provides sufficient cushioning. Moisture has trouble escaping from rubber boots; wool helps absorb the moisture around the skin, but the boot itself is naturally not breathable. Therefore, let socks and shoes dry and air out thoroughly after use.

For at home and sleeping

For the couch, a sock should be soft and comfortable. If you walk around the house in them, choose wool anti-slip socks. Anti-slip reduces the risk of slipping but does not replace slippers with a sturdy sole.

For in bed, we have Elia bed socks from Hirsch Natur. These wool-silk socks are lower than our regular socks and intentionally made a bit roomier. This makes them less likely to constrict and exerts less pressure if, for example, you suffer from fluid retention in your feet or legs. They are made of 70% wool and 30% silk and are available in pink, blue, and dark blue. They are comfortable bed socks, not medical compression or support stockings. In case of sudden, severe, or persistent fluid accumulation, it is wise to seek medical advice.

Under a dress or dress trousers

Thin wool knee-highs also keep the lower leg warm and often stay in place better than a short sock. Look for a comfortable cuff and sufficient length; a knee-high should end below the knee and not cut into the back of the knee.

Nordic, solid, or striped: does it make a difference?

The design in itself says little about warmth. Thickness, knitting structure, composition, and fit determine much more. Within our Nordic collection, you will find both thin and thick variants. Feel free to choose a pattern because you like it, but always check whether the sock matches your shoe and usage in terms of thickness.

Why we choose 100% wool or 100% pure nature

At Natur-el, we consciously choose socks made of 100% wool or at least a composition of 100% natural fibers. Not just a high wool percentage, but truly pure nature. Virtually all our wool socks therefore consist entirely of wool.

There are two conscious exceptions:

  • Elia bed socks: made of 70% wool and 30% silk. The silk makes these roomy bed socks extra soft and supple.
  • Wool-linen socks: made with 15% linen and the rest wool. These socks also consist 100% of natural fibers.

But don't 100% wool socks slide down? In the top 5 cm of the cuff, tiny elastic threads are knitted in. These are necessary to keep the sock in place. They are incorporated into the knit and do not touch the skin. This way, you benefit from a cuff that stays up, while the material against your skin remains purely natural.

Always check the product information for the exact composition.

How to choose the right size?

A wool sock should fit without compressing the toes. Socks that are too large form wrinkles; socks that are too small pull tight, can limit toe space, and wear out faster because the heel and toe are not in the intended position.

Very important for Hirsch Natur: these socks run very large. Our experience in the store is therefore that it is better to choose one size smaller than you normally wear with Hirsch Natur. If, for example, you usually wear size 40/41, look at the smaller size range first. This ensures the heel is in the right place and prevents excess fabric and wrinkles in your shoe.

Use this check in case of doubt:

  1. Look at your normal shoe size first.
  2. In principle, choose one size smaller for Hirsch Natur.
  3. After putting them on, check if the heel of the sock is really around your heel.
  4. Wiggle your toes: there should be space left for them.
  5. Walk a few steps and check that the sock does not rotate, slide down, or wrinkle.

Are you exactly on the border between two combined sizes? Then foot shape, desired thickness, and usage play a role. For hiking, the sock should fit snugly; for sleeping, it can be a bit looser. The roomy Elia bed socks are intentionally made differently and do not need to fit tightly. Feel free to ask us to compare a specific model.

Wool socks for sweaty feet

Wool can actually be pleasant for sweaty feet. The fiber absorbs moisture in vapor form and holds onto odors less. This does not mean your feet will never sweat again, but it does mean the sock is less likely to feel cold and clammy. Choose a well-fitting, not-too-thick sock and wear it in a shoe that offers sufficient space and ventilation.

Wool socks for children

Children's feet grow quickly and are constantly in motion. Therefore, do not buy them excessively large for growth. A sock that is far too big will fold over in the shoe and can cause irritation. For outdoor shoes, a smoothly fitting sock is nice; for indoors, wool anti-slip socks for children are practical.

We have separate collections for sizes 15 to 22 and sizes 23 to 34.

Why do wool socks wear out?

Wool is strong and resilient, but not indestructible. With every step, the sock rubs between the foot and the shoe. Most wear occurs at the heel, ball of the foot, and toes. How quickly this happens depends on, among other things:

  • the fit and size of the sock;
  • the inside and fit of your shoe;
  • hard nail edges or calluses;
  • your walking pattern;
  • how often and intensely you wear the sock;
  • the thickness, knitting structure, and composition;
  • the method of washing and drying.

A thinning spot is the moment to take action. You can reinforce or darn it before an actual hole appears. That is easier and better looking than waiting until the thread has worn completely through.

How to make your wool socks last longer

  • Rotate several pairs and give the wool time to regain its shape.
  • Let socks air out after wearing.
  • Keep toenails smooth and carefully remove sharp calluses.
  • Check the inside of shoes for rough seams or damage.
  • Put socks on and take them off gently; do not pull at the cuff.
  • Repair thin spots before a hole appears.
  • Do not wash more often than necessary and follow the care label.

How do you wash wool socks?

Often, airing out is sufficient. If the socks need to be washed, always follow the care label. Use a dedicated wool wash program with little movement, a low temperature, and a low spin speed. Wash similar colors together and use a mild wool detergent with lanolin, such as Lanalicious detergent for wool and silk. Do not use regular detergent, fabric softener, or a tumble dryer.

Lay or hang the socks to dry in shape, away from a hot radiator. Heat, friction, and strong temperature fluctuations can cause wool to shrink or felt. For all the details, read Can I wash wool? The do's and don'ts.

Frequently asked questions about wool socks

Are thicker socks always warmer?

No. Thickness only helps when there is enough space left in the shoe. If the shoe becomes too tight, pressure and less insulating air can actually cause colder feet.

Can you wear two pairs of socks over each other?

You can, but only if both layers remain smooth and the shoe is spacious enough. For hiking and ski boots, one well-fitting technical sock is usually better than two layers that can wrinkle.

Are wool socks suitable for sweaty feet?

Yes, often they are. Wool absorbs moisture and holds onto odors less. However, combine the sock with a well-fitting, preferably ventilating shoe.

How often should you wash wool socks?

Not automatically after every wear. Let them air out and wash them when they are truly dirty or no longer fresh after airing.

Are your socks really 100% wool?

Almost all of them, yes. The Elia bed socks consist of 70% wool and 30% silk, and some socks contain 15% linen; these are also fully natural compositions. Only in the top approximately 5 cm of the cuff are tiny elastic threads knitted in to prevent slipping down. These do not touch the skin.

Can you repair a hole in a wool sock?

Yes. Darning with thread is the best-known method. It is best to start when a spot is only thin so that you can reinforce the original structure more easily.

Which socks are suitable for poor circulation?

Choose a cuff that does not constrict and a shoe with plenty of space. Medical conditions require personal advice from a doctor or podiatrist; wool socks are not a treatment.
