This handmade darning mushroom is made of 100% FSC-certified pine wood and is approximately 10 cm high. What is a darning mushroom?
A darning mushroom is a wooden tool that makes it easier to repair holes in socks and other knitwear. You slide the mushroom into the sock and place the rounded top exactly under the hole. This provides a firm surface and helps prevent you from accidentally sewing the front and back of the sock together.
The shape looks a bit like a mushroom. That's why a darning mushroom is also called a darning tool, darning egg, or wooden mushroom. Whatever you call it, it mainly prevents you from needing three hands while darning.
How do you use a wooden darning mushroom?
- Carefully slide the darning mushroom into the sock.
- Place the rounded top exactly under the hole or thin spot.
- Pull the fabric slightly over the mushroom, without stretching the knit too far.
- First, thread horizontal strands over the hole.
- Then, weave vertical strands alternately through the horizontal strands.
- Carefully finish the ends on the inside of the sock.
For the best result, use suitable darning wool and a blunt darning needle for wool socks. With a blunt needle, you are less likely to damage existing stitches and can work more easily between the wool fibers.
Do you want the repair to be as unnoticeable as possible? Choose darning wool in a similar color. Or would you rather everyone see that you saved your socks? Use a contrasting color. We call that "visible mending." It sounds chic, but it just means you should be proud of your repair work.

Never darned a sock before? Don't panic. In our video on darning wool socks, we show you how to repair a hole with a darning mushroom, darning wool, and a darning needle.
Your first attempt doesn't have to be perfect. As long as the hole is closed and your toes stay inside, you've already come a long way. After a few repairs, you will naturally get a better feel for the tension and weaving of the threads.
Why use a darning mushroom when darning socks?
The rounded top supports the fabric around the hole. This allows you to tension the knit evenly and see clearly where stitches are missing. The mushroom also helps prevent the sock from shifting or folding over while repairing.
A wooden darning mushroom is especially useful for holes and worn spots on rounded areas, such as the heel, the ball of the foot, the toes, and the elbows of a sweater. You can also use it to reinforce thinning areas before an actual hole develops. That saves you from a complete rescue operation later.
Made of FSC-certified pine wood
The darning mushroom is made of FSC-certified pine wood. The FSC label means the wood comes from responsibly managed forests and controlled sources.
Wood is a natural product. Therefore, the wood grain, color, and texture may vary slightly per item. This is not a production defect, but rather what gives each wooden darning mushroom its own unique character.
Repairing is more sustainable than replacing
A small hole doesn't mean a good pair of wool socks has reached the end of its life. If you catch it in time, you can often perfectly repair worn spots and holes. By doing so, you extend the lifespan of your socks and prevent good wool from being thrown away unnecessarily.
So, check your wool socks occasionally at the heels and toes. Is the fabric becoming thin? Reinforce the spot with darning wool. Preventive darning takes less time than waiting until your big toe happily peeks out.
What do you need to repair wool socks?
How to care for your wooden darning mushroom
Wipe away loose wool fibers and dust with a dry cloth. Has the darning mushroom become dirty? Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry slowly at room temperature.
Do not let the darning mushroom sit in water for a long time and do not put it in the dishwasher. Wood and dishwashers have about the same relationship as wool and a boiling wash cycle.
Frequently asked questions about the wooden darning mushroom
What wood is the darning mushroom made of?
The darning mushroom is made of 100% FSC-certified pine wood.
How big is the wooden darning mushroom?
The darning mushroom is approximately 10 cm high. Thanks to the wide, rounded top, it is suitable for repairing socks and other knitwear.
Can I only use the darning mushroom for wool socks?
No. You can also use it for cotton socks, sweaters, sleeves, hats, and other knitted garments.
Is every wooden darning mushroom exactly the same?
The shape and size are similar, but wood is a natural product. The wood grain and small color differences may therefore vary per item.
Can I also repair a thin spot before a hole develops?
Yes, absolutely! By reinforcing a thin spot with darning wool in time, you can often prevent a larger hole from forming later.
What darning wool do I need?
Choose darning wool that matches your sock in color and thickness. For an inconspicuous repair, use a similar color. For visible mending, you can choose a contrasting color.
Which needle should I use for darning socks?
