FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND chunky wool men's sweater olive with navy
This one is for the truly cold-blooded. The FISHERMAN OUT OF IRELAND Ribbed Raglan Crew Neck is one of our thicker-knit wool men's sweaters. Sturdy, warm, and exactly the kind of sweater you’ll want to live in on cold days.
The sweater is knitted with two yarn colors: deep olive green and dark navy. Working these yarns together creates a unique heathered effect that looks subtle from a distance but has great depth up close. Not a solid green sweater, then, but one that is surprisingly easy to style.
It is designed and made in Donegal, Ireland, and consists of 95% merino wool and 5% cashmere. The merino wool provides warmth and breathability; the touch of cashmere adds just a bit of extra softness to the sturdy knit. An Irish winter sweater, without needing to buy a fishing boat first.

Olive green and navy in one knit
The combination of olive and navy makes this sweater special. Depending on the light, it sometimes looks greener and other times almost dark blue. The two-tone yarn runs throughout the entire knit, emphasizing the coarse ribbed structure.
Olive green and navy are both easy to combine. Wear the sweater with dark jeans, black trousers, or sturdy corduroy pants. It also looks great with brown leather, gray, rust, and other natural tones. You don’t have to do much else: sweater on, good trousers, and you’re ready to go.
Wonderfully thick and sturdy knit
This is not a thin merino sweater for under a blazer. The knit is full, sturdy, and substantial. This makes it one of the warmer wool men's sweaters in our collection. Perfect on cold days, for outdoors, in a chilly house, or whenever your heating isn't set to "tropical paradise."
The vertical rib structure gives the sweater a rugged look while providing natural stretch. The raglan sleeves slope from the neck to the underarms, allowing for comfortable movement at the shoulders.
How does this wool men's sweater fit?
The sweater has a classic, relatively straight fit. The ribbed structure contours nicely without the knit needing to be tight. The crew neck, standard length, and sturdy ribbed hems make it easy to wear as an everyday winter sweater.
Usually, you should choose your usual size. Do you want a looser fit, or do you want to be able to wear a thick shirt or shirt underneath it? Then you might want to consider one size up. Always check the size chart in the photos before ordering. Still unsure? We are happy to measure it for you.
Merino wool with a hint of cashmere
Merino wool retains heat but can also absorb and release moisture. This often makes wool feel less clammy than a synthetic sweater. The addition of 5% cashmere makes the yarn softer without the sweater losing its sturdy character.
Because this is a coarse and thick knit, it feels different from a wafer-thin merino shirt. Are you very sensitive to wool? Then wear a cotton or wool-silk shirt underneath, or come try it on in our store first.
How to care for this wool sweater
Wash it as little as possible. Wool has natural dirt- and odor-repellent properties, so a night of airing out is usually sufficient. That is better for the fibers, the fit, and the color—and it's a lot less work.
Does the sweater need to be washed? Use a cold wool wash cycle and a small amount of Lanalicious wool detergent with lanolin. Do not wring, do not tumble dry, and do not hang it over a hot radiator. Gently reshape the sweater after washing and let it dry flat.
Pilling is sometimes part of wool
With natural wool fibers, small pills or balls can form due to friction, for example under the arms or in places where a coat or bag rubs against the sweater. That does not mean the wool is of poor quality.
Carefully remove pills with a Gleener fabric shaver. It is better not to pull them off with your fingers, as you might pull the fibers out of the knit.
Don't buy if…
Are you looking for a light, thin wool sweater for a warm office? Then this is probably more sweater than you need.
Are you looking for a sturdy, rugged, and truly warm Irish wool sweater for cold days? Then you’re in the right place. This isn't some questionable middle layer. This is a proper, substantial sweater.
