Why wool is perfect for summer!

Wollen ondergoed in de zomer – biologische merinowol van Natur-el

Wool in the summer? Yes, of course! (Literally and figuratively)

Summer + wool = a sultry sweat-fest, right?

Well... no, actually.
As far as we are concerned, it is high time to expertly debunk a few stubborn prejudices about wool, because this natural material is actually fantastic in the summer. Whether you are looking for natural UV protection, a solution for night sweats, or just something that feels better than synthetic sticky shirts, wool is, quite literally and figuratively, your lifesaver in the summer heat.

Woolen underwear in the summer? Absolutely.

It might sound a little crazy. Woolen underwear at 30 degrees? But anyone who tries it never wants to go back. Super-fine organic (!) merino wool, often blended with silk in our store, is so soft and light that you barely feel you're wearing anything at all. It fits like a second skin, without pinching or overheating. And because wool breathes, it stays fresh. Especially under your clothes, when your skin gets warm, clammy, and damp.
It doesn't just feel pleasant, it is healthy: no synthetic fabrics against your skin, no chemical coatings, just pure nature. Because you already knew we aren't fans of chemical treatments if you had read this blog.

Sweat without worries

For everyone who wakes up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat (hey night sweater, I see you): wool is your summer hero. My partner suffers from this: if I'm not careful and he doesn't have his woolly on at night, our bed becomes a Turkish sauna (and we aren't even doing anything crazy ;-) If he has his woolen undershirt on, funnily enough, there's not much to worry about.
Wool fibers can absorb up to a third of their weight in moisture without feeling wet. That means: you stay dry, your sheet stays dry, and you don't wake up half-chilled as soon as you cool down. Wool is also ideal for athletes, warm-blooded people, women going through menopause, and actually everyone who gets hot easily. Woolen nightwear or underwear helps your body regulate its own temperature; synthetic fabrics really can't do that. And unlike wool, they start to smell too!

Wool as a natural UV protector

Did you know that wool also protects your skin from the sun? Yes, even a thin layer. The structure of the wool fiber blocks a large part of the UV radiation. So, if you are looking for natural UV protectors without chemical filters, a woolen T-shirt or undershirt is a wonderful addition. This is a nice thought, especially for children or people with sensitive skin. Of course, you should keep applying sunscreen and, especially when UV radiation is at its strongest, look for shade, but the idea that your woolen clothing also does something is a nice little extra.

So, can we now toss the prejudices about wool over the fence once and for all?

It is, frankly, SUCH a shame that so many people still think that wool is ALWAYS warm, heavy, or itchy. But that idea is so old-fashioned. Modern merino wool, like ours, is light, supple, temperature-regulating, and anything but itchy. It is one of the most natural materials for the summer. Furthermore, our organic wool is also biodegradable, sustainably and fairly produced, and perfect for even the most sensitive skin.

So if you are still doubting whether wool is right for you in the summer: just try it! Start with a shirt, an undershirt, or a nice woolen cardigan. Or wear one of our wool-silk sleep shirts at night and see what it does for you.

To be honest: sometimes it feels a bit like you’re cheating. So cool, so dry, so comfortable… And all that with wool, in the summer. Who would have thought?

Love,

Vera
