A sustainable wardrobe: that sounds good!
The time has come....
after a compelling documentary on sustainable fashion, a good conversation with that acquaintance who has already succumbed, a visit to our shop... From now on, you only want to buy sustainable fashion.
It is a noble ambition to switch to sustainable fashion from now on.
because, it's good for the earth, the environment, the animals, and also a good way to tackle that miserable fashion industry. But, how on earth do you go about that? You could of course toss all your "non-sustainable" fashion in the trash. But is that really very sensible? No, as far as I'm concerned, absolutely not. Good clothing that isn't sustainable actually becomes sustainable by wearing it often and for a long time. Sure, perhaps it wasn't produced in a sustainable way, or perhaps not under ideal conditions. But that doesn't change if you suddenly stop wearing it and it ends up on an already enormous pile of discarded clothing. Did you know there is a huge surplus of clothing? And that taking clothes to a clothing collection bin isn't necessarily a good choice? These clothes often go straight back to one of the countries where they were produced and end up on a huge pile there. Nothing romantic about: "Now they get a second life there."
But, how then?
As mentioned, it is a fantastic ambition to make your wardrobe more sustainable. And my sustainability tip is, take it step by step. So, have you really worn out that one favorite shirt completely? Then maybe it can still serve well as a cleaning rag? Then you can replace this shirt with a sustainable one. Preferably not just fair trade, but also made of, for example, organic cotton, as you find in our webshop. Because fair trade is not necessarily organic, and organic is not by definition fair trade...
The same goes for all your other clothes. Wear them out completely, and replace that one item with a sustainable version.
It might be a good idea to start with sustainable basics.
These are items that are easy to combine with each other and with the rest of your wardrobe. Take a simple shirt in a basic color. It can go under any jacket, cardigan, and over any pair of pants or skirt. Sustainable jeans are sustainable, because you can wear them for a long time and in different ways. With a chic blazer, it’s business-like, but with a cool shirt, it’s also great for a party or casual everyday wear.
And then?
You will notice that you can perfectly combine your non-sustainable clothes with your new sustainable items. Over time, your wardrobe will become increasingly "greener." This grows until eventually your entire wardrobe is sustainable. The big advantage is also that you don't suddenly lose a ton of money, but that you can build this up gradually. Therefore, it is not at all necessary to have a huge wallet if you still want a sustainable wardrobe.
