This one is for when you want to dress up an outfit just a little bit, but don't feel like wearing a stiff blazer at all. The PHOEBE by MADNESS is a short cardigan/jacket made of soft organic cotton jersey with a subtle texture in the fabric. Supple, comfortable, yet immediately quite smart.
And yes: it belongs to the BRIGIT skirt in the exact same color and fabric. Together, they make a beautiful set, but PHOEBE is also a lot of fun to wear on its own.
Why is the MADNESS PHOEBE cardigan so great?
Because it falls right between a cardigan and a jacket. It has the look of a short, simple blazer, but the comfort of jersey. No stiff lining, no complicated closures, and no fuss.

How does the MADNESS PHOEBE cardigan fit?
PHOEBE has a short, fairly straight fit and falls to about the waist/hip. This makes it a great match for a skirt or trousers with a slightly higher waist, preventing a bulky amount of fabric around your midsection.
I am wearing a size 40 cardigan in the photos. This allows you to better judge the length and fit. The jersey is supple and contains 3% elastane, so the cardigan moves comfortably with you and does not feel stiff like a classic blazer.
How do you fasten the PHOEBE cardigan?
At the very top, there is a small hook-and-eye closure. It allows you to subtly hold the two front panels together. The rest of the cardigan remains open.
Personally, I think it looks just as good worn open. You get that nonchalant, short jacket look that is very easy to throw over anything. When fastened with the hook, it becomes a bit more polished.
What is the MADNESS PHOEBE cardigan made of?
It is made of 97% organic cotton and 3% elastane. It is the same jersey quality as the matching BRIGIT skirt. Up close, the fabric has a very fine texture, which makes it look just a bit more special than a smooth cotton jersey.
The touch of elastane ensures the fabric moves comfortably and retains its shape well after wearing.
What color is TEAL?
TEAL is one of those colors that is hard to capture in a single word. It falls somewhere between dark green, petrol, and blue-green. A deep color that is surprisingly easy to combine.
It looks great with dark blue, black, denim, cream, and sand, but is also very cool when worn over a brighter color.
Can you wear the PHOEBE cardigan as a set?
Most definitely. We have the BRIGIT skirt in the exact same fabric and color. Together, you get a wonderfully comfortable two-piece suit that is very easy to style elegantly.
In the photos, I am wearing a dark wool camisole underneath. With a pretty blouse, turtleneck, or a fine-knit sweater, you can create a completely different outfit.
But if you buy the cardigan alone, you will get just as much use out of it. Wear it, for example, with jeans and a simple T-shirt, over a dress, or with wide-leg trousers.
How do you wash the MADNESS PHOEBE cardigan?
Wash the cardigan only when really necessary, at a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius on a gentle cycle. Turn it inside out, use a small amount of detergent, and preferably no fabric softener.
We would skip the dryer. Let PHOEBE air dry and gently pull it into shape after washing. This will keep both the jersey and the fit looking good for longer.
Is the PHOEBE cardigan sustainably produced?
Yes. The organic cotton is GOTS-certified and the garment is fairtrade produced. This takes into account not only the material itself but also the way it is processed and manufactured.
Is this more of a cardigan or a jacket?
It’s actually right in between. The cut looks like a short jacket, but the supple jersey makes it as comfortable as a cardigan. Ideal, therefore, if you want to look well-groomed without the feeling of wearing a formal blazer.
Why do we find PHOEBE such a handy garment?
Because you can truly wear it in many different ways. As a set with the BRIGIT skirt, it is chic and feminine; with jeans, it becomes more casual. And because it has a short fit, it also works very well over dresses and with higher-waisted trousers.
It’s the kind of piece you might buy thinking, "nice cardigan," only to discover you are pulling it out of your closet three times a week.
