Our untreated organic wool clothing still contains wool fat, i.e., lanolin, which ensures that your woolies remain antibacterial, do not hold odors, and remain soft and supple. If you were to wash your wool only with a detergent containing degreasers (like most detergents), you would strip this amazing layer from your wool and, along with it, the rich properties that the wool possesses!
